@thunfisch The US has always been super clear that data sovereignty claims by US tech companies doesn't absolve them the obligation to respond to data requests from the US. But yeah, the comedy that they both created this sovereign EU cloud and then immediately turned around and went "but okay sometimes it's just gonna pipe stuff to the US anyways because AI" is *chef's kiss*.

@georgetakei Thankfully JD Vance is one of the least likeable people on the planet. The pope met him and promptly died. He stumped for a regime that has reigned for fifteen years and it immediately ended.

@alienghic @MichaelTBacon @cwebber Yeah that's exactly the stuff I'm talking about. We abstracted basic competency out of our software! Stuff people used to learn as a kid we're gonna end up having to train people about at the start of computer science in college!

@krans @alienghic @cwebber @MichaelTBacon The problem is it is very hard to convince bean counters to spend massive amounts of money on looking for things that might or might not be there. The use case that's most interesting is very hard to sell the cost of!

@krans @alienghic @cwebber @MichaelTBacon There's a company called Darktrace that will sell you an incredibly expensive on-premise server to do machine learning anomaly detection on every single packet in your network. It's very cool. It's also very, very expensive.

@alienghic @cwebber @MichaelTBacon As an IT professional, *reviewing gigabytes of log files I generate daily to look for attackers* is absolutely something I want AI tools to do. But also that *has* to be local because of the potential sensitivity of the content.

@MichaelTBacon @alienghic @cwebber We are already past this point: When schools started giving kids iPads and Chromebooks instead of Windows PCs we ushered in a huge generation of people who don't understand the technology they use.

@MichaelTBacon @alienghic @cwebber Yeah I think there's some use in some cases that work okay, but only make sense at the current financially unsustainable offers. As soon as the prices go up/everyone has to pay the piper, the cases where LLMs are useful won't be financially justifiable.

@ben I think it's really important though to remind people that if your browser extensions are numerous enough to be a fingerprinting vector, you have a bigger problem, because browser extensions completely undermine the Internet's security model and if you have more than like two you are hosed.

@ben So I saw a post from LinkedIn about it and it's arguably better/not better. They are looking for content scrapers to block to protect your privacy... sorry, their monopoly moat.

The idea that Office 365 is compliant for use in any regulated space is *absolutely laughable*, but apparently the reason GCC High is approved for government use is because the government let agencies use it while they were evaluating it, and then realized so many agencies were now dependent on it, that they had to approve it even though it wasn't able to actually meet the security criteria.

One Microsoft product was approved despite years of concerns about its security.

@cas One thing that really excites me for hijacking prevention is @OpenSourceCollective. The OSC can steward ownership of your project's domain name or trademarks, and no single individual can run off with it. OSC also will only permit transfer to other nonprofits. So it can be a real commitment to the commons and solid proof you can't go commercial.

@atomicpoet I am quite comfortable with my home here, but I voted Yes because you seem to be pretty enthusiastic about it, and I think a diverse fediverse software environment is healthy for the network.
