Every step in the process of making pottery is a new and exciting way to ruin your pot, eh @lj@weirder.earth?
Working with porcelain, while demoing and experimenting and chatting with students I "accidentally" threw a beautiful moon jar-ish pot. Nearly perfectly spherical, small flared rim, lovely proportions and balance; about 10" across and maybe 11" tall including the foot and the rim.
But I slipping while trimming and now it's in the reclaim bin. Oh well, the Next One Will Be Better.

I needed a fence / wall for the studio shop that would provide a decent level of security, not require a permit (and that was a fun bit of research, let me tell you,) be easy to build without hiring contractors, *and* look reasonably good and cohesive. I also wanted to make it usable as a display backdrop for planters and wall decor.
I think I did all right...

No, it's that Week 1 is learning to throw / make pots, Week 2 is learning to trim (and then practice throwing after you've finished trimming). I expected it to drop somewhat, that's just more than I anticipated.
The best measure of skill increase that I have identified is the weight of pieces going into the kiln. With House Blend everyone's using clay from a common locker, with 1 and 2 pound balls (plus 5+ pound logs, but that's not first-month relevant), so they're consistent

Week 1 of classes - 4 class sessions, 27 total students (max 36), 6 of those first-time students, used 100 pounds of our House Blend stoneware (which is what all new students start with).
Week 2 just wrapped and used just under 25 pounds - which is a much bigger drop than I was expecting!
