@bryanredeagle@beige.party Technitium, Adguard, Pihole None of them are perfect, they all (afaik) abstract away the zone files, but I don't need more than some SRVs, CNAMEs and A/AAAA records at home. Luckily, I run dnsmasq for internal DNS so I am getting the worst of all alternatives - no web ui, no plain zone files but abstractions only. Oh and then my recursive resolvers are over complicated in addition to that.

@GreenShimada@lemmy.world old thin clients or similar (google Project TinyMiniMicro for a decent guide!) are perfect for this use case. x86, most of them have intel quicksync for transcoding, they are energy efficient and quiet.

@vestige@sleepyhe.ad don't mix work and private stuff.

don't. mix. work. and. private. stuff.

just use syncthing in a 'star' topology. have machines sync with the central node only. manage dotfiles using git or whatever.

@FEIN@lemmy.world buy something for routing and firewalling, and then something else for wifi.

place wifi access points (with a wired backhaul aka cable) near where you use wifi the most. add more access points to cover your appartment/house as needed.

I use two ancient tp-link eap 245v3 in my house, one per floor, and they are "dumb APs" only translating wifi to cable back to my switch and router. then a firewall/router.

you don't need much spec-wise. at my moms place I have a small SBC with two rj45 ports for routing/firewalling and similar dumb APs for wifi, and that setup manages their gigabit connection without issue.

@zrail@hachyderm.io oh consider incus on debian as well! great api, does system containers, application containers and vms. I am running most workloads on k8s, but run stuff I can't live without on my "NAS" using Incus containers...

@bug@fosstodon.org yes, it is slow, and a script like yours is faster. but that is not the point. the point is that you can use the same interface (yaml lol) to interface with APIs, machines, orchestrate changes on clusters et c all without reinventing the wheel. a terrifying amount of manufacturers and projects have ansible collections available. its like the old saying regarding perl and c, "with c you can write a fast program, but with perl you can write a program fast". scripts will be faster but at some point you will end up reinventing the wheel again and again, where you might save time just using ansible.

@pb4000@infosec.exchange linkding is really nice! I’m running my instance on fly.io free tier with sqlite (backup with litestream) and it’s been running great! I’ve imported ~15 years of pinboard.io bookmarks without issues.
