Got secrets in local .env? Afraid of a compromised dependency or agent reading your filesystem?

I built dotlock:

  • store secrets encrypted in .env.secrets
  • decrypted on the fly via php artisan dev

If this benchmark is to be trusted, current frontier is:

  • grok 4.5 (high): cheap + fast
  • opus 5 (medium): best
  • fable 5 (high): if you're feeling fancy and forget the rest.

Now time to see if Opus 5 is really that good. Source: https://cognition.com/frontiercode

I cannot express how shocked I am by how perfect it worked. (note: in this case I don't review the code)

My conclusions so far:

  • use Fable for important tasks/features that you don't want to mess up (i.e. it's worth the cost)
    • that could be implementation if it's really important/risky
    • or just the plan
  • Fable is also great at orchestrating big features using cheaper sub-agents (so don't think large task = lots of Fable tokens, Fable is really good at exploiting sub-agents)

complex (alternative to a $300 niche panorama software with heavy image processing), ZERO bugs (even though it builds a 1.2 GB image), handles not only the happy path but all the rest too (the software was perfect and did 100% of the job, better usability than competitors I tried), and orchestrated all the build and run, including using sub-agents for optimizing costs building it. One chat message for this.

smarter than me, there is no question. I review every single line of code and it handles edge cases and scenarios I wouldn't even think of. My main value becomes judgment/opinions (architecture, naming, experience) and ownership of the code (long term vision, consistency, etc.), as well ofc as understanding the product and the users (shifting towards "product engineer").

Storing files publicly on S3 (e.g. avatars): add publicPath: public and every file in the public/ subdirectory will be public. The rest stays private.

If you're getting old like me, writing long prompts in a terminal is annoying: can't use the mouse, select text, use normal shortcuts… I built a native Claude Code prompt editor: hit Ctrl+G, edit the prompt in an overlay window and hit save https://github.com/mnapoli/PromptEdit

Improved Bref docs on a quick win: cleanup the AWS SDK before deployment https://bref.sh/docs/deploy#reducing-package-size (btw could also be useful if you deploy your app on a server)

Why wake up now that _we_ are the ones at risk? Where was the outrage when we built software for companies putting others out of business or people out of jobs? Why are you saying that to me? Do you read my responses or am I talking in the void?

Now AI is threatening _our_ lunch and suddenly we're part of the rest of the endangered people and we need to be scandalized?

I don't think anyone will care if you advocate not to use it, you don't have to fear "tech bros". Just do it. I just don't think this will have any impact on the system, just like advocating not to participate in the capitalistic system. As mentioned ppl need a salary bc of how the world works today. Wish it were different

There are many things I don’t like in our society either, and I wish they were different. I didn’t like either where most software we built destroyed jobs and consolidated wealth for the richest. You’d have to be blind not to see it. Our society is a game of stealing wealth from others and it sucks. I think it’s either this or changing jobs. It always has been.
