So a couple of weeks ago I tried seeing what I would miss if I replaced it with this thing. Good old basic Casio, it tells the time, tracks the date, and has a light! I did not even have to buy it, I got it on one of my trips to have a watch I could run and swim with without worrying about damage. Turns out that not only I don’t miss much, but also really appreciate and enjoy a watch that is lighter, does not require daily charging, and is likely to survive a drop with terminal velocity.

It has been 10 years of having to remember to take the charging cable with me, even on weekend trips. 10 years of increasingly limited value — the weather widget is so slow that it’s faster to take my phone out. The sports functionality has been useless to me. The occasional Shazam without pulling my phone out, lower friction on purchases, that’s about it. Even in its broken state I can’t see a reason to buy another smart watch as a replacement.

I bought this watch as my first smart watch as soon as this model came out in 2015. It has seen a lot of places since, done fairly serious kilometers. A couple of years ago I dropped it and it fell flat on its face, chipping off part of it and leaving a couple of cracks, I fixed it with a dab of uv resin. A year later I dropped it again, had to use more resin and start using screen protectors to protect me from the screen (a sharp edge here, a shard there). It still works just fine.

The Vercel/context.ai security issue: I am more than a little peeved that people tend to point to AI only where it sounds useful. “The attacker must have used AI to breach us so badly and quickly” sure sure, could someone ask about the software delivery process at context.ai? To what degree it depends on LLMs, what is their review process, how do they manage risk?

The more I interact with people who use LLMs to work on codebases which I know and they don’t the more I empathize with doctors facing patients who use the Internet for the diagnosis and treatment ideas.

@sue @onepict It is good advice but I don’t get why people make this distinction between junior and senior programmers. As if at some point, relatively early during one’s career, one gets to the point where they know good code and they can stop learning. I am three decades into it and I am still learning to control complexity at various levels and keep updating my trade off estimates. LLMs are as dangerous for seniors as they are for juniors, you just get stuck or regress from a higher level.

@jzillw In Poland we don’t say “as even banks and insurers finally catch up to the reality that OpenAI has been wildly overselling what it can deliver and the AGI that was its only plan to ever become profitable is not coming any time soon, we are heading towards seeing the bubble burst and trigger a global financial crisis”, we say “to jebnie” and I think that’s beautiful.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt Of course, when you dump a truckload of shit somewhere you can’t expect it to flow predictably in the direction you want to go, but if you dump dozens of truckloads flowing in different directions and piling on top of each other one of them will eventually touch the other side. You just need to keep dumping.
