The disrespect for HTML feels …childish? If you can’t build your websites using HTML properly how can you call yourself a professional? It’s embarrassing. Folks going on about AI hallucinating and outputting shit code meanwhile they can’t even wrap a piece of text in a paragraph tag.

@jan@social.eden.one as per the article it does depend on the font. Every font is different so it won’t always be better to have one or the other. It’s a case by case thing.

@gunnarsson@mastodon.social apologies the site has always been intended for people who know what they are and want to know or do more with them. I would send people there after I did talks about variable fonts so the intro was never really needed. But I can always add a section on what they are! ☺️

@djenz@indieweb.social I will see if I can write up a post for you about this with some tests and examples. But basically it’s just the standard fallbacks - you can add in a bunch of options in the fallbacks but it works the same as a standard font. You’d have to handle the layout shift yourself - but this is not dissimilar to using a regular custom font.

@jyasskin@hachyderm.io the answer to both questions is that it depends on the font. 1 variable font can still be smaller than 2 standard fonts. And you can only use the font variant numeric options if the font supports those features.
I've relaunched https://variablefonts.dev where I share my love and experiments with variable fonts. It's a mix of demos, articles, lists of fonts and the occasional special font and/or foundry spotlight.
