Generally interested in technology of all kinds, specifically free software, single board computers and microcontrollers. Linux user for a long time and still learning.
I'm getting into networking gear, 10G+ Ethernet, FibreChannel, and DPUs.

Cats don't care if you're ND.

NOTE: I like to think of this site as a tech journal for my #homelab, but what's the point of a social network if you're not social? Favorites and comments are appreciated.

Somehow I made it through the last five years without owning an HDMI dummy plug. Mostly because I'm in the fraction of the population that owns more than three computer monitors.

But I've now bought a couple because of my M1 Mac laptop with a broken screen. Mac laptops won't stay on when closed unless you plug in a display, keyboard and mouse. Rather than a screen, I'm just going to use the dummy plug and access the Mac remotely using locally-hosted rustdesk and SSH.

Despite being sick this week and suffering from lack of sleep, I managed to build the little XCode sample project Apple provides to virtualize MacOS on MacOS.

I don't have any desire at all to pay for a subscription to Parallels. This project is a barebones MacOS VM creator and runner using Apple's own virtualization framework. With a tiny bit of effort, I can add command line arguments to specify the VM bundle. Good enough for my purposes.

I had run apt update on my #debian trixie system several times and nothing had been available. I'd assumed that I'd be seeing a new kernel image to fix the #copyfail vulnerabilities.

I then looked at the debian.sources file and there was no security repository. Of course, I added it and am installing updates.

Is this really the default configuration in 2026?

I'm a collector of things and lists of things. Here's a list of PCIe accelerator boards with CPUs you can run Linux on.

I have these:
#XeonPhi
#Bluefield

Looking for a cheap one of these:
#IntelVCA

I'd like to think it's possible on the
Broadcom PS225
AMD Pensando DSC-25

But no luck so far

This doesn't fit the category:
Asrock BC250
Octominer r8

Going through a box of PCBs and I found a board full of chips from 1990 with a connector I didn't recognize. Turns out it's a Lapis SE/30 DPD board for the PDS Mac slot.

It's great you can just search these things up now. I think I've had this 20+ years without knowing what it was.

I have an M1 MacBook Air with a broken screen and want to use XCode. Since it's an Air, I only have the option of a single external screen, so I'd prefer to use Linux and access the Mac remotely.

Are there any no-cost, open-source, no account required, encrypted, subnet-only clients for Linux to use MacOS remotely?

I don't want to use VNC over SSH for reasons.

A PC without Intel or AMD or Nvidia. A shame it's so expensive.

Since it's a quiet evening.

I recently learned how to make refried beans. While I'm sure it's better when you cook the beans from dry, it's easy to throw a bunch of onions and peppers in a pan, bloom chili powder and cumin in oil. When these are ready, throw in a big can of pinto or black beans without draining. Cook down a bit, mash everything with a potato masher, a spatula or blend if you're fancy.

In 15 - 20 minutes you have a filling meal to eat with chips, in a tortilla or as a side.

@ytc1@mastodon.sdf.org I've used it since the beginning and don't plan to stop. It has everything I expect from a browser. I was very happy to find it on this platform since that makes it much more flexible even if it is missing some of the components found on other systems (e.g. widevine).

#openindiana with the MATE desktop feels like Linux from the 2000s but with a modern browser and file system.

I was able to install everything on the 16GB drive, but because of the image-based packages there isn't enough room to upgrade.

I think a 32GB ssd would be sufficient and more than 64GB would be ideal and not require you to aggressively dump images.

This OS is an intriguing alternative to Linux and the BSDs.
