@foxyloon@blimps.xyz I tracked down his video, and the current title is "You'll Subscribe to Your Router, Too" and within the first 2 minutes he wink-nudge implies the NSA is installing surveillance malware in every American router, and down in the comments he's using the official account to upvote people who aren't particularly nuanced. The source for not being allowed to buy your own router seems to be conflating ISPs requiring you to use their modem with not being allowed to bring your own wifi (something that's been the case on certain ISPs for decades), then a vague gesture at ISPs being big lobbyists. So I'm not sure that this was most nuanced video, and the internet just misunderstood his very specific language.

Does Steve have any source for why it is “very likely” that may happen, or it is just “everything in tech sucks, so they’ll probably force you into another subscription because that’s just something they like doing”? Because the new regulations are incredibly stupid, but mandatory ISP router rentals aren’t a part of it.

Apparently I’m bitchy about tech today, so sorry to the people just here for squeaks…

But I just saw a “news” video saying you’re not going to be allowed to own a WiFi router, you’ll be required to rent it from your ISP… and as far as I can tell, their source is “vibes”.

Vibes are not a source. 😡

There are stupid and corrupt things happening in the router space that I’ve posted about before and that is certainly grounds to view things with suspicion, but one bad thing being true does not turn every speculation about more bad things into confirmed fact.

Making shit up and presenting it as fact because “it’s probably something they’d want to enact” is still disinformation, and it pulls attention away from and casts doubt on real reporting.

So I was browsing the local Craigslist for deals, saw this ad for PC repairs, and like... just LOOK at this slop.

Motherboard inside the screen of the laptop. The side panel(?) of the desktop is full of hard drives(?). "Windows install" on the service list twice, and the symbol next to "Desktop Repair and Custom PC Builds" is a printer. The more you look, the worse it gets.

What are the odds they just ask ChatGPT how to do everything?

@KayOhtie I had someone who's profile was on complete lockdown send me two or three, and like... the reason you have to put in a request was because I got one or two follows where the vibes were off in a really strange, hard to quantify way. If you give me nothing to go on I'm gonna bounce it, and if you keep resubmitting it over and over, then I know I made the right call bouncing it.

@NanoRaptor I've got a daily backup to a USB external drive, a weekly backup to a NAS, a monthly-ish backup to a second external drive that's disconnected and stored in a more secure corner of the house when not being written to, and a once or twice a year backup to *another* external drive that I store at the house of a relative who lives in a different town. Plus another two full copies of my system on external drives intended less as a backup and more as a way of having the ability to get at anything I could possibly need while on my laptop, and another 2-3 portable SSDs with select items. It's actually kind of a problem...
