I think we’re talking about two different things. Feels like a lot of people in the US are bringing authoritarianism on everyone. Then they get surprised when it gets turned on themselves. It’s terrible and alarming, but it didn’t rise out of nowhere. Kudos to those with the nerve to call it out. But also, yes of course we don’t want anyone to lose their freedoms, bc it’s a danger to us all. It’s just frustrating bc much of the NYT had a hand in this.

But come on, AP: “The risky strategy has consequences when government programs go dark, and Democrats have little to show for it so far in terms of policy victories.”

I upgraded my yearly subscription several months early, so there’s a boost! Hope everyone pitches in a bit.

This feels like White Man syndrome. Pelley is a good, earnest guy, but he still doesn’t quite get it in a way that others whose entire lives have been spent dealing with this bullshit. For example, you can see how Ketanji Brown Jackson understands what is going on, and isn’t going to sugarcoat it as even the other liberal justices do. Writers like Jamelle Bouie and Adam Serwer tell it like it is.

Yeah, the kid was still in college. Still is actually. Grateful for that. A vacuum is a great present now, quite a turnabout from a couple years ago!

This is how we ended up with Trump. It’s depressing as hell.

The GOP isn’t just defunding higher ed, ofc. Education in general, with the defunding of public schools through charters and vouchers.

Sounds like your complaint is more about the primary. Lots of Fetterman voters have regrets, but I don’t understand the process by which Kenyatta could have gone from 11% to winning the primary, much less the general. Which would have been awesome. It sucks that so much of the country is racist, among other things. I worry about Platner in Maine. I hope I’m wrong. So many devastating disappointments in politics.

I’m really not sure what you’re suggesting. What would have brought about a better outcome than voting for Fetterman in the general election? I understand your frustration with shitty candidates. Regardless, it was him or Oz. Too bad Kenyatta didn’t win the primary.

Really depends on the admin. Many are on top of this. Some close registrations as needed. Social is the most vulnerable bc it’s huge and less moderated, which is why some block .social entirely. The decentralization is what makes harder for bots.

But someone told me that increased energy consumption is fine bc renewables will cover it all! So frustrating.

I was the same way! Never had used cat treats before, but hopefully it softens the blow. Treats also actually motivated my current cat to use her scratching posts instead of the furniture. Positive reinforcement ftw!

Ah yes, I’ve had to do that for my cat! All I could do is reward her afterwards. It’s so hard, and they don’t understand.

Important distinction: WHITE working class. Racism is the drug that has been slowly killing the US, from the beginning.

It sucks having no good choices, but I’d rather be in a situation like Hungary or Canada or France or even England than the US. Kudos to voters everywhere who show up. It’s the most basic but most important first step.

lol I am here for politics and cats. It says so right in my bio. This is where I get my news. And I exclusively look at the feed I curate. So I just don’t get it when people complain about lack of politics, of all things. I’ve seen my share of arguments, so I wouldn’t call it an echo chamber. But in the end, my Mastodon experience is what I choose to make of it, as it should be.

I think the point about it being akin to a poll tax is most important. It is deliberately exclusionary at multiple levels.

Your email can only contain one question if you want to get an answer, unfortunately. I don’t make the rules, it’s just the way it is. Sigh.

My response to that has been:
The only people complaining about the lack of action are those who aren’t taking any action. This includes protests and the many other actions brave people are taking every day.

You could say that about anything Adam Serwer writes, always an insightful counterpoint to others at The Atlantic and much of the general punditry. Thanks for sharing.
