I used to post about random DOS games that The Script™ picked from a pool of about 17000 games but after about 140 games I unfortunately lost the motivation to continue. If you're really interested they can be found all the way down on my timeline (I posted about the last game on 15-08-2023)

@dammn@mastodon.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social There are manufacturers that makes phones with a de-googled version of Android that they maintain and support, like Fairphone and Murena. Such phones are not cheap, though, but going against the mainstream never is. (I had an article with a whole list of manufacturers, but of course I didn't bookmark it. Will update this message if I find it again) Edit: Jolla is another one, but they contracted the AI brainrot.

@vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net Warez CDs are a surprisingly useful archive. I had the same with VistaPro (a landscape rendering program) a few years ago, where a Twilight CD is the only place that has seemingly preserved a later release of VistaPro. I'm surprised, though, that textures from Myst were even a thing that StrataClip sold as a package, and popular enough that it was pirated.

After working exclusively with open source code, developing using the Windows 3.1 SDK is a weird experience for me: you cannot see the implementation.

Are you curious if `DrawText()` uses `TextOut()` internally, or how the exceptional situation is managed that there can only be single `WM_PAINT` message in an event queue? Too bad!

It's all built on "just trust us our (paid) documentation is accurate". So strange.

@deane@contenttechtodon.org @256@mastodon.social Because the review mentioned Quarterdeck's website, I dove into The Archive. But I unfortunately couldn't find the "results" (benchmarks?) the article spoke about, just the press release: https://web.archive.org/web/19980119221249/http://www.quarterdeck.com:80/qdeck/press/speedyrom.html "Quarterdeck benchmarks show gains ranging from 11% to 92% for the second and subsequent passes on a CD-ROM with SpeedyROM active".

I feel bad about boosting anything related to the depressing state of the world, in which absolutely soulless husks determine the fate of so many. Especially so as I have been ignoring news channels since last year. If it's really important I'll hear of it some other way. In tech we have some obviously Hollywood-level "bad guy" characters, and then you have Red Hat. Irrelevant for years because of their own doing, now marketing themselves as a platform for murder. Purge them wherever you can.

It controls well and I really like the soft color scheme. If you're open to feedback, I have two interface related things: I keep reading the (lowercase) 'v' in as an 'y', and it would be nice if units that are out of movement points have some indicator.
