An absolutely fascinating article with tons of evidence that most all claims of data center capacity are just PR spin. A small fraction of announced data center capacity actually comes online. Most of the projects are either stuck in construction hell or were just lies and exaggeration to start with. https://www.wheresyoured.at/where-are-all-the-data-centers/

@paninid@mastodon.world I've often wondered how absolute this should be. I do think there's some value in exposing people to a constructive hardship, but it's very much a judgement call on what builds character and what's just destructive for no good reason.

I met Ted Turner once at a South Dakota Governor's pheasant hunt. I was a huge fan of CNN in my 20s -- I kept Headline News on the TV constantly. He wasn't a perfect man, clearly, but I admired what he had accomplished. RIP.

At San Francisco airport, you can apply for a pass to get through security even if you're not flying anywhere. So you can take someone all the way to their gate, meet someone at their gate, or just hang out in the airport. Handy for very young or very old travelers, I'm sure. https://www.flysfo.com/passengers/services/gate-explorer

TIL that you can't detect CORS errors from JS code in the browser. If your fetch results in a CORS error, it happens at the browser level, outside of JS. All you can do is catch the error and make assumptions as to what caused it.

Playing around with binary search in C#.

I have a JSONL file with 1,000,000 lines. Each line is a full JSON document, including a unique ID property.

Creating a binary index of these IDs takes less than one second. The position of the ID in the index corresponds to the line number of the data in the JSONL file.

Binary search of 1,000,000 numeric IDs takes 5-ish ms.

Then we have have the line number, and reading that line takes 250-ish ms.

@edza One thing you don't expect is that as the things that need to be done trail off towards the end, less and less people can do them. So the house will sit empty for days until that ONE GUY who installs the Flippity Flap can get over there, and there's nothing else that can be done in the meantime.

I love you JavaScript (not really), but the whole import/require, ESM vs. CommonJS thing is an absolute mess. It's been 11 years since ESM became a standard, and I'm still running into issues (like Jest being sorta ESM-hostile).

LeBron James is widely considered to be one of the great 2-3 basketball players in history.

Also, when the next Laker game happens, he will set the record for the most NBA games played by anyone, ever. He's been playing for 23 seasons.

To be THAT good for THAT long is just a class by itself. For that reason, I'm moving him above Jordan in my mental roster. And I have always been a Jordan-forever guy.
