Today, I decided to back @gotosocial@gts.superseriousbusiness.org with a monthly donation of 10,00€. The #GoToSocial project is free and open source Fediverse software providing a social media microblogging system that you can host yourself (or join an existing instance of) – very similar to how #Mastodon works, the software this instance is running. In years of hosting my own personal GoToSocial instance, I have come to love the project and never once run into an issue, even during setup, when upgrading to new versions or when performing database migrations. The team is lively, clearly passionate, responsive and amazingly friendly, and their direction has turned GoToSocial into what is in my opinion the best Fediverse server software out there at the moment. Supporting the project with a (recurring or one-off) donation provides their two main developers the means to live and continue developing the software independently and for free – by enabling them to pay themselves a very, very modest wage of just 1.000€ a month, according to their donation drive. You'd support the health of the entire #Fediverse, software sovereignty and not least a queer-led, progressive collaborative software project that makes the internet a better place. I encourage anyone and everyone to consider their support if they can afford to do so! :) Not affiliated with the team, just a supporter. :)

I translated the free and open source #Minecraft mod **Autowork** to German!

Autowork expands the automation capabilities of the base game, adding a wide variety of utilities to enable you to build all kinds of contraptions. What makes it stand out from most other technology mods is its simplicity: it very much adheres to the 'vanilla' style of automation, works with Redstone, does not add any new energy systems, complex HUDs or world generation. It's simply a do-it-yourself toolkit similar to the base-game autocrafter.

And that's exactly what I loved about it; enough to contribute a volunteer #translation to the mod. :)

Come join the German translators' club!

We've got...:
- Formal language in wildly inappropriate situations, sir!
- Over-use of hyphenised compound-nouns!
- ›Inconsistent‹ punctuation “standards„!?
- A conspicious absence of any dialect, sociolect, slang or casual manner of speech whatsoever!

And somehow despite it all – a boatload of fun at work every day. 💜 I really, genuinely do love the vast, sometimes silly, but always exciting world of the localisation industry. You folks make it worthwhile to do this! I wouldn't want to do anything else at this point. Thank you, everyone.

Dear fellow linguists in #German #localisation …

Could we please collectively agree to stop hyphenating compound words so much?

If it's a Spreewaldgurke in real life, why would it be a Düsterwald-Beere in your game?

Yours kindly,

Your LQA.

Here's a silly resource I just found: a comprehensive, annotated list of comic book FX (like "Argh!", "BOOM!", "Yeowch!" or "BRRAAAP"), with examples!

https://www.comicbookfx.com/fxlist.php

Not quite was I was looking for, but I am so glad it exists.

Today I learned that Feast of the Ascension (Christi Himmelfahrt) is not celebrated throughout all of Europe! Or, well, at least not as a public holiday. I had no idea!

The agency I work for is based in Portugal and apparently it is just a regular workday there.

Happy Father's Day to all who celebrate!

@neurovagrant 'Zero trust' has always been about potentially nefarious human intentions and sabotage, and since so-called 'AI' cannot have intentions and are supposedly merely doing what they're told as they are programs, they are considered inherently trustworthy. The problem is that they think of 'AI' in terms of a traditional program: we know what it does because we programmed it, so it cannot do anything it's not supposed to do, unlike a human. They ignore the black-box nature of 'AI'.

@neurovagrant They distrust humans due to their fallibility and potential ulterior motives, while they believe 'AI' to be an objective machine. It's a weird situation where they both anthropomorphise algorithms by ascribing intelligence and intent to them, while at the same time relying on the fact that they're algorithms as a reassurance that they are objective mathematical and logical tools. It's cherrypicking the best of both worlds – simultaneously supposedly thinking and infallible.

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot I've caught myself going off the rails a bit in business e-mails since the whole LLM thing. I've recently signed off an e-mail with "I hope the coming autumn season will treat you well".
