@mia@void.rehab at least two affordances: algorithmic tl doesn't show you things that make you sigh in exasperation, because there is labeling. it helps a little that replies to retweets are mentions to the retweeter, so they can tell people to get the fuck out of their menchies. I'm also wondering about some mechanics of how replies work, especially involving blocked people. might be the same as latest timeline in 2022 Twitter for all i know though. i also think that mastodon has some truly stupid views that create many such problems. federated timeline for example, where people see irrelevant posts and get mad. i think the last piece is, you know there are people on bsky or whatever who are fucking Nazis and the platform does nothing about it and you deal with it. you don't try to harass them off or something because you can 1. block them lol and 2. don't have any dumb features like federated timeline that show you their posts. https://v.cx/2025/04/mastodon-exit-interview

this is a very good post about why i don't really use fedi anymore: the software provides no recourse for posts one doesn't like on federated timelines, besides harassment.

and oh boy have i seen the harassment. I've seen the things people have done based on third hand accusations. i have seen the ruined lives. any community even slightly adjacent to fedi has to deal with the persistent threat of harassment from fedi. chaos, e.g. has a huge problem with this.

for example, some project changes a llm policy to reflect the reality that llms have some useful applications while also enabling large amounts of antisocial behaviour that much be managed. two things true at once. they should budget for death threats and personal harassment from fedi. this isn't right, but it's what happens because people can't choose the things they see on the bad website. thus they do the thing they habitually do on fedi, but this time outside fedi: suppress the things they don't like through harassment.

@sam @quinn yeah it says absolutely nowhere in the site that the reservation is special whatsoever. from what I've been told, if you want to get a sncf reservation otherwise you have to go to a physical ticket machine *in France*.

apparently the db app sells sncf reservations for the same price as ice reservations. an interesting development in making French trains ... exist to me.

@leo it's a more pragmatic bazel more or less. there's built in pkgconfig rules and such, and sandboxing is less strongly enforced (remote execution is actually the only way to sandbox which is kind of annoying in fact though). the docs kinda suck though.

we build #nix store paths entirely outside of nix using deps from nix, then re-import them (with correct deps!) into nix once built. this powers writing a docker image in 6 lines of code without devs touching nix language at all.

you can use a new parameter in #lix 2.95's CLI to import store paths built by other build systems like we're doing, using `nix store add-path --references-list-json`.

@pseudonym@mastodon.online i think it depends on the domain. like, code review is not seriously expected to catch all bugs; it's merely a step in a process. if you need absolute correctness (most don't!) then formal methods, a shockingly rare practice in the most critical industries, might be the right choice. a stronger argument would be "the bugs are less obvious" though i think that too can be fought with observability. but that strategy only works well in application code, i.e. code which "makes money" (a notion which should be challenged, but that's another issue), rather than infra layer stuff with higher correctness needs and worse observability. and you know how the old saying goes: "if the code is good it's probably not making money". idk, people write slop where they already wrote slop due to the same pressures as before.

@raito @robinheghan @lix_project right, in my experience, nixpkgs contributions coming through lix channels tend to have a much easier time getting in because we *have* committers who are willing to go review stuff pragmatically and merge it. this holds regardless of the unforced fascist-sympathizing errors in governance by the (very same ones doing this for the past 5 years) cppnix members of the steering committee that make the nix project social spaces unsafe for the majority of the lix team. it's not all or nothing but i certainly would like to have a replacement nix project that's not a dumpster fire that pushes out all the women and other minorities and burns out everyone constantly

@next @bkuhn @richardfontana I really like the drafting style of this one. The dual licensing nullification mechanism of effectively making it MIT-like by deleting restrictions is cute. I suspect the outbound GPL compatibility clause may have some unclear implications if plugin systems, cross implementation test suites licensed under GPL (e.g. the snix test suite) or other things are involved, but I can't quite point to why. Part of what feels funny in interpreting it here is that the license both exists as a "primary copyright holder" side thing and also as hundreds of separate licenses by contributors.
