I went with my parents to a pizza place. When we were done I went to the bathroom. I came out, flagged down the kid behind the counter, whispered to him, and showed him to the bathroom. Then I ushered my family out of the restaurant without bussing our table. They thought I clogged the toilet.

I have not opened Xcode in at least one year and I have done more and better Apple platform development than ever before in that time. I don’t know what I should take from that observation. One day you’ll pick up your child for the last time ever and there’s no way to know when it will happen.

@grork@mastodon.social Millennials and Gen Z have an easy time identifying Gen-X-sourced humor—the repost is an example. One common tell is that the joke relies on pointing out hypocrisy with edgy language or cuss words. Most people my age won’t find that interesting. I wonder what are the Millennial styles of humor that Gen Z could articulate in the same way but I can’t separate myself from?

A lot of Gen X humor, as observed by younger generations, is “pointing out hypocrisy with edgy language.” It doesn’t land for anyone else. What is the flavor of consistent Millennial humor that only Gen Z can articulate?

I am not lamenting a loss of a feeling of expertise or control, or really anything. Just noticing this growing sensation of an overhang… a sloughing off of the friction that gave structure to interests and concerns and hopes and despairs that is happening more quickly than the momentum of those things can be slowed down.

I have this profound sense that nothing I care about in software development matters anymore, and that there may still be things that do matter now and in the future, and I could know them right now, but human processes and adoption are the bottleneck to rebuilding our shared understanding of human-computer interaction. Like… there can't be that many more times in my life I will need to think about or type "UICollectionView." The last may be this year. It feels dumb to not be there already.

I did a 4,000-line refactor from SwiftUI ScrollView + LazyVStack to UICollectionView + UIContentView in about 6 nonconsecutive hours with little actual attention spent. It's wonderfully performant and the only things I had to tweak were spacing. This would have been the highlight of the quarter for me a year ago and now it is the least significant thing I will accomplish this week. It is also why all the air has gone out of so many topics for me. Declarative or imperative UI? Who cares?

@nick@sloan.host @hynek@mastodon.social To the second point: there was never a pipeline or roadmap to break. Software engineering as a career has been entirely organically grown because of durable, outsized demand compared to supply. e.g. we had interns because we literally needed more bodies, forever. If I’m wrong on my first point in my first post, the way we fix this is to actually build a roadmap and pipeline; something like formal apprenticeships.

@nick@sloan.host @hynek@mastodon.social FWIW I fall into the first camp but I still think the math supports making as much money as possible in software while it is still possible. One additional year of a salary will handily beat getting through an apprenticeship a year earlier. But, I also think that the end of knowledge work will turn most cities into Detroit, and trades work is heavily reactive to the local economy, so that career shift would also have to be paired with a huge move. Not confident I can pick a winner.

GPT 5.5 in Codex has been able to independently fix complex issues that GPT 5.4 and Opus 4.7 in Claude Code could not solve in several days, even while collaborating.

@me1000@mastodon.social I guess that will ultimately come down to whether Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI can outcompete companies that can't stand up their own software factories. I don't think it is a guarantee that these are all developer platforms forever, just for now. See: Claude Design.

Being struck by the first arrow (iOS 26) was painful. Being struck by every additional arrow (griping about Liquid Glass for an entire year) is a pain you inflict upon yourself. Drop the bow.

To all of the people still resisting Liquid Glass: welcome to the rest of your life as a curmudgeon! It will never be fun. You can get off the ride at any time, though.

@mattiem@mastodon.social IMO that is the biggest threat of AGI. Civilization has the moral arc that it does because, thankfully, being bad is highly correlated with being stupid. e.g. we can rely on the MAGA world to not actually be very effective. AGI would end that correlation, especially because having the most capital is highly correlated with being bad.

@mattiem@mastodon.social I think…

  1. We are more knowledge-transfer-and-compounding bound than anything. It takes a long time to teach people, disseminate information, come up with cognitive abstractions, etc. My agent can easily use your writing to make better concurrency decisions than I can, and much faster than I can internalize what you wrote.

  2. Our intelligence has “too much” agency tied to it. i.e. people with aspirations, hobbies, beliefs, other things to do. Labor is inefficient in this way.

If AGI is achieved then the winner will have an infinite money glitch. They will be able to get more marginal utility out of every atom in their supply chain than anyone else in the world. That is why I am bearish on the existence of consumer electronics during AGI: there will always be greater utility for that silicon in data-centers-full-of-geniuses because it compounds. It is notable that all of the frontier labs are behaving like they are racing to a finish line that materialized in 2026.

I am bearish on the threat of local models to frontier labs. It may placate hobbyists–for as long as consumer compute exists–but the effects are different in the market. If you can trade money for guaranteed work products, and the utility of those work products compound, you will always be incentivized to throw as much money to the best and fastest compounder. Imagine if local models matched Opus 4.7 today but Anthropic was selling access to Mythos. They would still be saturated with demand.

Does it make sense now why I’ve been saying all of the idle compute and silicon we have in consumer electronics is an anachronism? Why we will be compute-constrained for the rest of our lives? Why this is not an asset bubble comparable to previous ones? Why we are on the path to capital replacing labor? Companies are already falling over themselves to spend senior-engineer-level salaries per engineer on AI that isn’t close to the top of the S-curve (if there even is one).
