Fair enough -- physics (etc) is not my bailiwick. But claiming that public science should be defunded because it hasn't made "enough" progress is a misuse of these arguments at best and completely ungrounded at worst. From a policy standpoint makes sense to quantify and weigh the outcomes of different alternatives and adopt that with the greatest expected value. (unfortunately, I fear that the agenda of these bad actors is the opposite)...

Add to that all of my friends and colleagues in biotech start-ups live in fear of what will happen when they have to do all the basic reaearch and not just development (but will check out your podcast nonetheless)…

Well, speaking for my own field (bioscience) we have seen paradigm shifting breakthroughs in neuroimaging, neuromanipulation, gene manipulation, and viral prevention in the last three decades … ALL due to publically funded research. The ROI on this type of research is over 100%. The ROI on my biosciences index fund is hardly within an order of magnitude of that. And these are very sciences they wish to defund. Make it make economic sense.

What is the evidence that U.S. science has “stalled” (e.g. what is the ROI)?
And what is the evidence that private industry could do better (again in ROI)?
( Thiel #propaganda )
Quoting
The new WH science report's central contention is the Peter Thiel thesis that science has been stalled due to funding failure.
But this completely misses that there might be more fundamental speed limits to science. John Horgan, author of "The End of Science" and I discussed the Thiel thesis and how science has inherently become more difficult as "easy" problems were solved early on.
