Middle-aged queer trans Chicagoan. Fond of the ancient world (casually), board games (medium-crunchy), feminist SF/F novels, etc.. Crossposts to @klara5.myatproto.social; formerly @listel[l]ian on the bird site. Follow requests welcome; don't hassle me if I decline. I write code for work and therefore have no brain remaining for hobby programming, but a long time ago I did grad school in type theory. Profile pic: me in Rhea Ewing's FINE. On my work laptop (PopOS-aka-Ubuntu, previous LTS, old Gnome-based Cosmic) the F1-12 keys have their tradition effect; holding down Fn triggers the media key meaning.
On my personal laptop (MX-aka-Debian, latest stable, XFCE), F1-12 act as media keys by default, while Fn bring back their traditional meaning.
This is terrible for my muscle memory! But I can't find settings for this on either. I just want it consistent; I don't care which way. Any idea where I should look?

Someone I know, an obligate Mac user without much money, has an ancient and dying laptop. They'd been thinking maybe a refurbished 13" M2 MacBook Pro or Air as a replacement, given the M-series' reputation for long lifetimes, but are now tempted by this "Neo".
What should I advise here? One might hope that a newer machine would last longer, but is the "Neo" less built-to-last or otherwise bad? And there's the question of locking them into the reviled latest MacOS.
