@menos @fabio These pictures are nothing new. We've seen them hundreds of times. News stories about violence sell well. There is no knowledge gap here, only repetition. But -- how many Israeli peace organisations can you name? Did you see the big protests in Tel Aviv? How many Palestinian peace organisations do you know? Did you hear about the peace conference that filled a stadium? Those are the forces that could actually settle the conflict. Lets support them.

@DziadekMick@mstdn.social Actually I was not talking about the middle east, but about social media. If you propagate pictures of violence you don't give your readers a chance to do anything else other then be appalled and, possibly, increase their hatred. Your answer confirms this — I can assure you, all Zionists I know and have spoken to absolutely condemn the violence against Palestinians and are aghast about what's going on. Problem with hate is that it never solves a conflict, it always makes it worse. If you hate, communication is over, and violence or ignorance are the only options left.

@fabio The word "dehumanizing" means to make someone seem non-human to yourself or to someone else. A soldier can only kill if they picture the person as "the enemy" or "a target". They have to shut down their empathy. The man in the picture has dehumanized the woman. For what he's doing he should feel the full force of the judicial system (which in the west bank is absent, sadly). But to the viewer both these people are anonymous. Neither of us have ever met them. Most people will use them as representatives for the groups "the Palestinians" and "the Jews" or "the Isrealis". Would you have also shared pictures of angry Palestinians trying to kill children, or raping girls? Or of grinningly loading rocket ramps? Of setting off bombs in Cafés? I hope not, and you shouldn't. I stand by my opinion. As much as I agree with you that the violence in Gaza and in the West Bank has to stop, circulating pictures like these does not help. Instead, maybe think of supporting groups like Omdimbeyachad, or Women Wage Peace, or Women Of The Sun, and others.

@fabio The problem with these pictures is that they dehumanize people. Show that picture to a group, and then measure their emotional response when they see a Jewish child being tortured, vs a Palestinian child being tortured. Other way round, show a photo of the angry face of a Palestinian murdering Jewish children by choking them (Hamas was wise enough not to photo-document that) to a group of people and then measure their emotional response when they see a Palestinian child being tortured, vs a Jewish child being tortured. Dehumanizing makes these atrocities possible in the first place. If the media — and this includes us on social media — spread this, we amplify this culture of dehumanizing. If we really want these atrocities to end we should amplify the voices of those who work for peace, who risk their lives and/or their security to end this war, and celebrate their victories.

@dpnash@c.im @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @W6KME@mastodon.radio @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Mmh, my thoughts went along those lines a bit too. If he could see them, why can't I, my telescope's better than his. I've red records of people who observed stars in broad daylight using telescopes, so I thought maybe a bigger lens might help? The pinwheel has magnitude 7.8 which doesn't sound too bad. But like I said, there was nothing, not even a slight hint of anything. Uniform blueness. That's why I was curious whether you'd seen it with your very nice setup. A dark sky, unfortunately, isn't an option for my any time soon.

@dpnash@c.im @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @W6KME@mastodon.radio @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Some weeks ago, on a clear night, I tried to see the pinwheel galaxy. Took me a while to find the exact spot, but what I saw was exactly dark blue on a dark blue background. I could make out nothing. Not even a faint difference. That was with a six-inch reflector, near a big city. You've probably seen it?
