@matt_birchler@mastodon.social Mac display when traveling was the primary use case, but turns out an $80 USB-C portable monitor does just as well and takes up almost no space in my laptop bag. I sold the headset last month. The M2s are still going for nearly $2K, so I put that $$ aside in preparation for the potential folding iPhone later this year.

@marcoarment@mastodon.social As far as I can tell, this is a 1Password thing. It happens on my Studio, but not my laptop (Studio has 1P, laptop does not). I once woke my Studio from sleep and the screen was full of about 200 of this same error. Over and over and over again.

My Meta Ray Bans are dying. Bluetooth just cuts out for 10 seconds at a time, every minute or two. Looking for alternatives.

I never logged into any Meta services with the glasses and don't use the AI features. They are basically nice Transitions sunglasses with headphones built in. I use the camera occasionally, but rarely (moving pics off of it with no Meta account is a chore)

Easily 99% of the "tech" i use in these is the headphones. Open air podcasts + sunglasses are a perfect combination.

Looking for non-Meta replacements, but nothing too expensive. I’m _really_ waiting on the rumored Apple glasses, but that's likely a year away, at least.

Any one have any experience with other brands of "headphones-in-glasses" products?

Is it bad if Disney+ works differently on your smart tv than it does on your Android phone? Also yes, but yes×10. We've found that users aren't as dedicated to their operating system as they are to their apps. Notion or Slack work the same wherever you use them - that's a feature. The "platform" is Netflix or Disney+ or Slack, not iOS or tvOS or Android. People want Disney+ to work the same on their AppleTV and their neighbor's Roku and their parent's LG TV. As a 20+ year Mac user I don't like it at all, but our surveys and research prove that what I want is not what 80% of other people want.

@matt_birchler I always thought it was silly when Apple split iOS and iPadOS a few years ago. There was no reason for it then, and there is even less reason now. Just drop iPadOS totally at WWDC. Then explaining the folding phone won't be confusing - it's just all iOS at different screen sizes.

I want an old-school Microsoft Entourage-style all-in-one calendar, email, and task app for iOS that just uses the system mail, reminders, and calendar integrations.

No extra logins, no different syncing systems. Just open the app and see all my stuff.

I love third party apps like Fantastical and Airmail. BUT - my corporate overlords won't let anything log into my Exchange server except Outlook or the system. So I've been stuck in Apple Mail hell for years with no Share Sheets or automations.

@agiletortoise@mastodon.social As a person who works on a pretty popular non-standard streaming app for AppleTV, I can confidently say there are dozens of reasons to not support Apple's native video player. Top of the list:

Ads. Streaming services live and die by ads (like it or not), and the built-in player has very rudimentary ad-insertion options, and no options for interactive ads, pause-screen ads, or overlay banner ads (i know, they all suck - but they pay the bills)
playback enhancements like custom scrubber thumbnails and chapter marks
personalized "next episode” and autoplay logic
enhanced closed caption rendering (fonts, styling, placement- CEA 708 is fine, but an old standard)
proprietary accessibility audio description triggers
Non FairPlay DRM
Dynamic forensic watermarking
Device concurrency limits (i.e. "only 2 screens on Netflix”)
Playback telemetry
Custom dynamic bit rate logic (ours is frankly better than Apple’s, and I bet Netflix's is even more tuned)
Cross platform consistency (we have the exact same video player on iOS, Android, Web, AppleTV, GoogleTV, and most smart tvs)
Branding - AppleTV already has people skip the app mostly from the “Next Up" row in the TV App or home screen. The player is the branding these days.
Eliminates dependency on Apple, and waiting for the yearly update cycle to add any new features (if any) to the player.

Today I remembered I have a Vision Pro sitting on the table by my office sofa.

Today is also the day I put my Vision Pro up for sale.

It's a little sad, really - I have all the relatively modern v1 things in my collection. First AppleTV, first AppleTV with tvOS, first iPhone, first iPad, first Watch, firs iPad mini, etc. I'd love to keep this thing around as well (even though I rarely use it), but two things:

1. Its huge. All my other OG electronics fit in a small plastic bin on teh closet shelf. This won’t.
2. Resale on this is still nearly $2K, so it's actually a pretty good sell.

Dropping whatever I make on it into a savings account because I'm gonna want that cash when the foldable iPhone comes out.

Most people don’t give a shit about working with a dev to fix a bug or improve a product. They want their thing to work without thinking about it. And some of us do it all without even tracking what city a user is in, let alone who they are individually. Not all telemetry is bad.

There’s no “asking questions to reproduce” at that scale, especially when we’re forbidden by COPPA from collecting any personal information. Anonymized telemetry, metrics, and crash logs make our products better.

Probably sends telemetry data. Crash reports? Telemetry. Product research on which features are used the most/least? Telemetry. It can be used for nefarious purposes, tracking, and data theft. But it's also used for very important software quality metrics.

It’s the legal terms that govern your use of the software. Especially considering software that is hooked to an LLM is no longer just *A TEXT EDITOR*. It's connected to the internet. It can send your data elsewhere. It can receive data. All of that stuff requires legal approval. I totally respect if someone doesn't want AI all up in their business. If that's you, don't use a text editor with AI features. We all have options.

I don't care much about which cut I'm watching* or if the aspect ratio is a little off. I WISH I cared more about that kind of thing, but most media is just background noise for me. *except the terrible CGI junk in the late 90's re-releases of Star Wars. That was laughable...
