I was happy to get a tax refund from the US IRS except a few days later I got a notice from Japan's NTA asking for an extra payment of pretty much the same amount 😔
I wanted to charge my phone and I had just gotten back from a trip, so I picked the first USB-C cable I could find and plugged it in the first USB port I could see.
It took an hour to charge from 16% to 24%! I love this technology.

People still use CottonBureau? I bought 3 shirts from them, the graphics were distorted so I talked to their support and they sent me 3 others which had exactly the same problem. 🤦♂️

The changes in this year's anyAppleOS are interesting. If you discount the AI features it almost sounds like they asked each team "what has been bothering you for years and you've never found the time to fix/improve?"
That's how you end up with things like Ethernet status in menu bar on macOS, DRM video playback in iPhone Mirroring, and Improved unread badge accuracy in Mail.
There's a trend/tiktok where someone leaves something on the roof of their car and drives around a supermarket parking lot. Everyone tries to catch their attention with a very predictable "banana on your roof". It's very dumb yet funny because everyone is concerned except the person who's acting all oblivious.
I just saw someone doing it at my local Costco and I've been cracking up for the past few hours 😆 If you see it don't take the bait!

@armadsen@mastodon.social In evaluating US vs Japan 2 things are very important: knowing what you need in life (I have a kid so suburbia means cheaper, more space, less crowded, clean, safe and no stress) and having the right expectations (gonna need to drive everywhere, no 24/7 convenience stores, "boring", etc.). I do miss Tokyo because it's the exact opposite but we wouldn't be able to enjoy it because... kid. We can visit whenever though, and if we change our mind we can easily move there as well.

@armadsen@mastodon.social US has been good. It helps that I'm fluent in English and people can't tell I'm a foreigner. High income and blue state also help a lot. Wife is US citizen with great credit score and driving history so it gave me a good starting point and affordable auto insurance.

@armadsen@mastodon.social I think US healthcare is probably a lot worse outside of blue states/big cities and when you're not a high earner. So while the "best" experience might be better than Japan in some ways, the "worst" experience is likely unimaginable there.

On the other hand I have no clue how much I'm going to be required to pay and whether a visit is going to be insanely expensive or totally free. It's like everyone worked hard so that things are as complicated as possible. (and this is with one of the best insurances, allegedly)
So it's been about 6 months since I moved to California from Tokyo, and exploring the healthcare system here and comparing it to what I'm used to is so crazy to me.
On one hand every part of the patient-doctor relationship, service, treatment and even technology is better than in Tokyo.

I was explaining vibe coding to someone and the best analogy I found is the slot machine.
Sometimes you hit the jackpot (big part of implementation gets done), but most of the time you're getting shit results so you have to keep pulling the lever hoping to hit the jackpot again.
If you don't do it yourself or don't understand how it works you might think you win every time, but you don't.
The house wants you to play but they don't want you to win every time because you'll stop playing.

@aetios In Japan, most providers offer IPv6. However, IPv4 or IPv6 over PPPoE is insanely slow (like, pay for a gig, get 5mbps slow). That congestion can be avoided by picking a provider that does IPv6 IPoE with DS-Lite or MAP-E for IPv4 over IPv6
