Hundreds of millions of Pokémon Go players spent years filming the streets, parks, and buildings around them to earn in-game rewards. Those roughly 30 billion environmental scans are now owned by Niantic Spatial, and they helped train a camera-based navigation model that a U.S. defense contractor is preparing to put into drones and other military robots.

@dillo@fosstodon.org Maybe different extensions to the markup could be supported via different plugins in the browsers.

@dillo@fosstodon.org I could even imagine that XML namespaces could come in handy to define a core grammar and allow for extendability, without changing the core every week. Maybe that's a terrible idea, and we would end up with each website coming with a list of extensions the browser needs to support. On the other hand, can't be worse than what we have now. 🤷 Could be nice if the browser would just ignore extensions it doesn't support and that then has to be considered when implementing a website. 🤔

So it would need to be reviewed if HTML/XML is a suitable format for simple parsing.

I haven't implemented a browser, yet, but my initial reaction to this is that XML comes with schemas, which would be very useful for enforcing a grammar. The tools already exist. Don't throw out the baby... etc.

@ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu @sushee@ohai.social I think so, too. I tried it, too, once. But I didn't see the appeal of porridge that's not piping hot. 🤷

@aartaka I suspect that's what browsers do anyway? Maybe you don't even have to do that and can rely on browsers doing it for you. Have you explored how sloppy you can be, without breaking the rendered result? :D

@aartaka Editing HTML directly and focusing on the tools for doing it, instead of how to generate it, is an interesting approach! 🤔
