@floooh@mastodon.gamedev.place @SonnyBonds@mastodon.gamedev.place These little things are so important. Another one I always check is how easy it is to create a custom character controller / access the collision detection data. This is often surprisingly difficult/impossible, for example in Unity/PhysX. (At least it used to be impossible to get collision information for kinematic rigidbodies back in the day)

Takeshi's Cashew (a band) are great! Just noticed that their music videos have an aura of old computer graphics and thought you might enjoy it:

@ralphonse Probably on the optimistic side, but with the 45kWh battery, lighter than modern standards and and a low profile cross section like this it doesn’t seem impossible to me!

Today I encountered this Volvo Amazon (from the 50s) and the hero who converted it to electric WAY BACK IN THE 90s! After getting a new battery pack from a crashed EV and solar panels in recent years it has a range of 400km and charges a few 10s of km per day on sunny days. Basically an infinity car!

So inspiring, I’m doing something like this some day! Imagine the future we could have had.. and maybe still can.

@neauoire @nasser Thanks! Going to request some of these for pickup for the next time the book bus comes by. (The book bus is such a great thing, do you have it as well? Part of the libraries in town)

@d6 (Forgive a Linux newbie) So this will run without X like SDL relies on? I think small LCDs from e.g. Sparkfun can show up as framebuffera, right? And the display on MNT computers?

After working on uxnfloppy for so long, I knew that I had to try writing an emulator for UEFI (the modern replacement for BIOS) at some point. Turns out that using clang and C is much easier than learning and writing 16bit assembly and doing software archeology, who could have known :p

I present to you 'uxnefi', a cobbled together UEFI application using the core of uxn2 (by @neauoire@merveilles.town & @alderwick@merveilles.town ) that can print stuff. Here is primes.rom:

@mjk@hachyderm.io Oh no, you were said to destroy the Siths, not join them! :/ Jokes aside, I’m trying to figure out why I feel so much despair when my programming heroes adopt this tech. I think a difference might be ”the reason why we create projects”, is it to realize an idea or to do the work/process? Maybe. I would rather not have a x86_64 backend in my project than to use this tech. But.. I suspect you would not have paid someone else the same amount you paid big tech now to implement the backend before LLMs were good enough? LLMs makes it feel like you did it yourself to a higher degree than delegation to another human would? To me it feels like, what’s the point in doing a project if you’re not doing it, might as well play guitar or something. I’ll make sure to read the post nonetheless!

@magnetic_tape It's not yet ported, I just spent an evening getting a bare-bones UEFI application up and running. Next steps are bringing over an "uxncore" (written in C) and actually using UEFI APIs to implement Varvara. Takes a few weeks at least :)

@d6 Just saving a list of foundational software projects that refuse to take LLM patches is also a worthwhile endeavor, then one at least knows what one can depend on.

@d6 Did you see @josch trying to build an old Blender version for arm64? It was very hard given the number of dependencies. The moving ecosystem makes this very hard, but maybe that’s exactly why one should do it now? https://community.mnt.re/t/checking-on-blenderability/4234/4 I do think archiving a modern operating system stack is a very big project, maybe something smaller would be feasible. A fully realized uxnfloppy or an uxn implementation for UEFI would be an interesting project, especially if write/read from multiple USBs is supported, then one can multiply the environment.
