On a more positive and mundane note: I had a grapefruit today that was so mind-bogglingly delicious that I've been thinking about it for hours. A piece of joy that this timeline hasn't ruined yet!

Showing LLM output to another human without solicitation is likely banned ❌

(from this second to last section)

Boy do I wish my work had a guiding principle even remotely ressembling this 😂 if this is accepted it'll already be quite an achievement, even if it leaves a bitter ethics-taste in the mouth…

@wyatt@soc.megatokyo.moe @Sylvhem@eldritch.cafe this one's a ~2019 Asus Zenbook. On windows there's a special asus app and it displays some sort of little menu. Utterly useless, but it never shows up as a regular display so this was a jumpscare when i first booted into linux 😂

Hades 1 was such a neatly crafted game, I "only" expected more of the same in Hades 2. But I am blown away by the environments, the art style, the soundtrack. What. A. Treat. :amaze:

the creature, looking at the portrait of Frankenstein's mother after killing his brother: wow, so lovely, I feel calm now. "but presently my rage returned; I remembered that I was forever deprived of the delights that such beautiful creatures could bestow"

the creature, finding Justine sleeping in a barn: what an agreeable face, such youth and health. She'd smile at everyone but me. "not I, but she, shall suffer; the murder I have committed because I am forever robbed of all that she could give me, she shall atone" *plants evidence*

That... that is incel behavior 😂

@pythonbynight@hachyderm.io some people at my company are also pushing for broader LLM use while trying to "find solutions to the code review problem". I was thinking a few days ago, they sound like they're too embarrassed to say "let's get rid of reviews entirely". Like they're hoping someone else will suggest it. Or that the practice will disappear organically. Clown engineering 🤡

At work today I reviewed yet another PR that looked cursed by an LLM. Not fully vibe-coded but noticeably unpolished or sloppy (in the non-"AI" sense).

I trust that my colleagues are well-intentioned and that they review and rework the generated code. Yet over the past months I've noticed a drop in quality…

I'm wondering what the cause is. Is the initial generated code so bad that their standards shift without them realizing? Or so bad that their typical amount of polishing effort is no longer sufficient?

Either way… this is tedious. I'm gonna need this bubble to pop ASAP. Or even yesterday.

@maxleibman somewhere in the book Empire of AI, Karen Hao quotes an (unnamed) DeepMind scientist who responds to a claim from Sutskever that modern neural networks "might be slightly conscious" by saying: "in the same sense that it may be that a large field of wheat is slightly pasta"

@da77a9@infosec.exchange @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange @pixx@merveilles.town I would guess that the breadcrumbs given by rustc's error messages are more conducive to the LLM landing on working code than runtime crashes using C. Also what you or I find hard may not matter to an LLM that doesn't "understand" like a human does. I guess my point was that this "from-scratch implementation" is a fiction: an LLM could not have invented the first C compiler any more than it could have invented rustc. It's spitting out a remixed version of code and techniques invented by many, many, extremely ingenious humans. At a cursory glance it has wow factor, but ultimately all LLM vendors are greedy ingrates trying to extract value from the work of others :grr:

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange Their choice of using rust for ccc is also not innocuous: using rust means benefitting from the expertise of all the rust contributors. For example, unsafe blocks aside (i didn't check if ccc has any), you can't praise this compiler for not segfaulting if rustc made sure it can't!
