One approach that works is a close coop with a GM, taking scenarios suiting a style. Personally, only twice played to a game completely blind (like players) -- fine, but a few places lost an opportunity.
System also matters. E.g. so far Witcher RPG was my fav, while the fights of D&D are too long to my linking. ;)
But yeah, to me it was many hours of "medieval fantasy" of many sorts and one prepared collab with a synth player for Dune.
I also love when GMs just put moments and places into the game that would go well with the music.
So far I got a reasonably epic horn moment with a saxophone (brought thanks to the scenario foresight) -- a nice short entry as it was too loud for the regular scenes at the table. And also one session with mixed approach, live music + effects from the GM.
The clue is that these don't have to be "good tunes" to come up with. Imperfect or cliché -- somewhat fitting is enough. Players are too busy playing, they won't notice if you play a pop hit at 25% speed either.
