Trans people are denied gender-affirming surgery because of their BMI. The 'justification' is that fat people have more complications during surgery and/or recovery. However, research has shown that high weight is not significantly associated with complications.

People-first language is only suggested for things that are considered undesirable in our society. No one ever says we should use, for example, "a person with blondness” or "a person with overheight.” The problem therefore isn't necessarily where we put certain words, but that those words (and the conditions associated with them) are seen negatively. So no, saying “a person with obesity” will not solve weight stigma in our society.

Weight discrimination in healthcare is not about fat people feeling hurt when their doctor says something about their weight. It is about fat people not getting adequate care for their conditions and symptoms, and being told that losing weight will solve everything.
