@Hex@kolektiva.social but even if you weren't forced to buy a car you are forced to deal with the negative externalities like air pollution, noise pollution, and pedestrian fatalities. Let's not forget that cars brought us the delightful innovation of leaded gasoline, which then literally coated the planet in lead. I do think LLMs are bringing us the next form of leaded gasoline, everything is getting worse, and all information is getting warped. Misinformation was already getting bad before LLMs but it's accelerated that problem by an order of magnitude. It seems to exacerbate mental health problems in many people. I could go on.

If you post to the photography or painting related hashtags with shit you made with AI you get blocked on site. It's not a painting if you didn't fucking paint it. It's not a photo if you didn't use a camera to take the picture.

People complaining about the Steam Machine price don't seem to understand that: Valve is not subsidizing the computerThe computer is not locked down like a traditional console. You do not need to pay a monthly or yearly fee in order to play your games onlineThe Steam store consistently has the best sales on the marketThe computer has access to every game in my library that can run on the hardware, as does any computer that runs SteamValve will not charge you an upgrade fee per game when the Steam Machine 2 is releasedThe cost to build an equivalent PC is slightly less, yes, but you literally cannot build a PC that has the same form factor as the Steam Machine. Mini-ITX is still bigger than the Steam Machine. The difference is huge. I could not fit a Mini-ITX computer in my TV room, I could fit a Steam Machine in my living room If you consider only points 2 & 3 above, the lifetime cost of owning a Steam Machine is probably on par with the lifetime cost of owning any other console.

@jonny@neuromatch.social I'm struggling to figure out what is going on in that charles repo. It looks like it's a place for a specific open claw agent to find work and it does this by offering bounties to people who will send it issues in other repos. But then the issue tracker is riddled with other bots opening issues showing work they did in other repos. Each one of these issues then has multiple other bots replying saying that they'll fix the issue. And then there's yet another class of bot that is trying to fix every issue in the charles repo by simply adding a package.json file or something similar to the charles repo. The whole fucking thing is a rats nest of wasted compute and I hate it.

@erisceleste @daisy Yes, as far as I can tell the guy I was dealing with was only measuring the time it took to write the code, and not all of the time around it. He was bragging about he only wrote "about 5 lines of code", and he was absolutely not counting my code review time, which was certainly more time than he worked on the whole PR.

Like I don’t know if they’re using the tool heaps differently and getting better results, or they’re doing the same rework as I’m doing and just not perceiving it as a slowdown, or if they have different and much more permissive quality standards to mine.

I suspect it's a mixture of things, but IME the people who I work with directly that all see it as a force multiplier are way more permissive of quality (and arguably wouldn't know what quality even looks like anyway), and are also bad at tracking how long things take.

One guy I know spent 8 hours prompting and reprompting claude to craft a plan, then had it implement the plan. The plan was garbage and the implementation was worse than the plan. I could have cranked out what he had Claude do in less time. The code review was also a slog, took me longer to review the code than it took him to prompt claude (it was like 8k LOC), and there were like 200 comments on the PR. He spoke highly of this experience and described claude as a force multiplier afterwards. He's delusional.

Put differently: if what is arguably one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in the software world is allowed to enshittify this hard, then we're truly cooked. Microsoft is actively learning lessons from being able to provide such poor service for such a critical piece of infrastructure. The lessons they are learning are not good.

Genuinely infuriating that nearly the entire industry put their trust in GitHub, didn't divest after the Microsoft acquisition, and now that reliability has been garbage for a long while, seemingly no one cares. I see a few people talk about it on Fedi, but I would expect that from Fedi. Very few people I talk to about this seem to give a shit, and the fact that Microsoft isn't constantly being publicly dragged through the mud for fucking up the reliability of GitHub is not a good sign for the industry.

Related question: Have you used "open ear" earbuds while doing tasks like mowing a lawn with an electric mower? Is that reasonably possible without cranking the volume so high that I damage my ears? Or do I really need to go with an in ear earbud? I struggle with in ear stuff as they all irritate my ear canal. I'm looking for earbuds because over ear headphones are way too uncomfortable to wear during the summer while doing yard work, or while working out. Boosts welcome, but please only reply if you have actual experience, not speculation. Assume I am already knowledgeable about headphones, I have 4 pairs I regularly use that vary in price from ~$150 to ~$1,000 USD, I am really only looking for a specific answer to my problem.

I have a really specific request, hoping Fedi can help! I'm in the market for a new pair of earbuds for working out and doing yard work (mostly mowing my lawn with an electric mower).

I am interested in the Beyerdynamic Amiron 200's, but I can't find any reviews. Do you have a pair? Do you like them? How do they compare to other headphones you've experienced?

@elexia@catcatnya.com correct. No one is doing a single prompt, especially the developers who are enthusiastic, and definitely not the OpenClaw enthusiasts. The argument I've seen for the cost per prompt pricing being low has supposedly included the training costs. Essentially folks are saying you can amortize the cost of training across all prompts later, so cost per prompt is: amortized training cost + inference cost. However, no one actually knows the amortized cost per prompt, AND no one seems to be accounting for the fact that these models aren't around for very long. It would be one thing if we could amortize the cost of the newest frontier model over 10 years, but we're simply not doing that. No one knows the true cost, and as a result the boosters want to argue that it's cheaper than you think, but all evidence shows that it's incredibly expensive when you consider that we're now trying to increase how many terawatts of power we can produce by what seems to be an order of magnitude, just so we can support these models. I don't recall seeing a ton of news about how we need to significantly increase our energy output because Amazon was scaling up AWS, or Microsoft scaling up Azure, or Google scaling up GCloud. I'm sure they had an impact, but not like what we're seeing.

I'm so happy for you to finally have a tool that can write your code for you so you can collect a 6 figure paycheck for doing essentially nothing. I wish you were forward thinking enough to have any concept of negative externalities. It'd be a lot easier to be excited about these tools if they were sparking our country's investments into solar and wind, but they're not, they're instead being used to justify more investments in fossil fuels. These tools, which were already built by extracting the labor of countless people, are now being used to justify extracting more fossil fuels from the planet so we can increase the rate at which we're cooking the earth.

I understand why LLM enthusiasts don't want to acknowledge that their tools use a ton of energy, but it's really frustrating to see people try to downplay the energy usage ("it's so low per single prompt that it doesn't really matter!") while also constantly seeing news like this:

https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/19/softbank-to-spend-an-eye-popping-33b-to-build-huge-u-s-gas-power-plant/

If these tools don't use a ton of energy, then why are companies like SoftBank building the largest natural gas power plant in the US? Why is xAI burning a ton of natural gas in Memphis? Make it make sense. You cannot have it both ways.

@vie@hachyderm.io oh for sure there's a level of feeling superior to others mixed into this. I reviewed some code this past week that was really bad, super backwards, and nothing like anything I'd seen before, and I said as much in my review, but more diplomatically. I was then lectured about how it's actually really clean, and a "well established" pattern. The problem is that the pattern they said they were using wasn't what was in the code, and my suggestion for what they should do, was actually the pattern they were referencing. They had no idea what they were doing, yet they felt it necessary to tell me that it was well established, and "clean", and that I was wrong.

@vie@hachyderm.io I'm sure I don't truly know, but I think that it's essentially a form of short sighted eagerness, combined with imposter syndrome. They feel like they're able to do things they could not do before, and they want to be the first/most eager to do it because they feel like that will keep their job secure. But really, if your whole job can be automated with an LLM what incentive is there to keep you? What value are you providing if you don't understand what the code being produced does?

One of the ways I'm dealing with AI slop at work is that when I'm giving feedback on the work I'm making sure to never assign the responsibility of the bad code to the AI. I'm directly saying that "this change that YOU made needs to be corrected". I'm always assigning the output of the AI to the person who put me in the position of reviewing the work. It is their responsibility to read the code that they're trying to review, they are responsible for 100% of the code, so they also get 100% of the blame when it's bad. If a change is confusing or nonsensical I'll ask "why did YOU make this change?". I'll never ask why an AI made a change, that we cannot know. All we can know is why someone thought it was acceptable to ship garbage, and we can assign them the responsibility for the garbage that they're willing to ship

@astraluma@tacobelllabs.net @Dio9sys@haunted.computer looking at the technical specs that seems like maybe it's purely a software limitation and something that could be resolved with a 3rd party app, or a future update from them. I would definitely choose this as a primary phone if it was fully featured.

@TechConnectify I appear to have the same dishwasher as you, or at least a similar model based on the rinse-aid dispenser. However, I cannot figure out how to determine if the rinse-aid is empty outside of just occasionally pouring more in until it starts to overflow. There is an indicator that implies that it's some kind of light or something but it's never lit up for me, does it light up for you? Trying to figure out if I have a defective unit or not.
