If I'd been smart I should have scheduled it for the weekend so US people might have been able to make it, but the release date was today and I was sort of forced to line up with that (it didn't make sense to me to do a party and then not make the tracks available right after).... it's always a tricky one we're all doing a permanent AMA on here anyway eh 😉

My new record is out. 20 years since the last one, would you believe it.

I usually find it massively irritating when people compare themselves to established artists, as if there is some sort of equivalence, but I feel forced to do so in an attempt to convey the style of music as briefly as possible.

So I'll just say it's something like Brian Eno's generative ambient, combined with Meshuggah. With a dash of Eliane Radigue perhaps.

It is actually not like any of those of course. Happily! And yet grumpy.

I'm doing a "listening party" for my new album on Monday 13th, 10pm UK time.

I am struggling to describe the sound and style, it hovers in a limbo between many things.

The tracks are fast and heavy, but also veeeery spaced out this time.

also fully aware of the contradiction in feeling a duty to reduce meat consumption because of a (possibly imaginary) connection to some cats, but the little guys couldn't care less and are burning through more than a compensatory daily quota of fish

I have to say that since cats entered our household about 6 years ago, our meat consumption reduced about 90%.

I feel guilty eating plants as well though, to be honest

One night I was in the middle of my live set (to a mostly empty room) - a guy playing pool walks over to the booth, leans over the mixer and shouts in my ear "Hey man can you change the record?"

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza Second one: this completely baffled me the first time you posted it, but if I approach it with that "dreamy" mindset I get it. It's not actually a banger, it's something else. I think pop should grab you in 3 milliseconds, and the beat on this starts 50s in. And there are no hihats. So weird... And then when hihats appear near the end, the result is the lost momentum you point out. Huh?! I like that it's a mixed gender group, that seems really rare and it shouldn't be.

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza (pathetic character limit forces split responses) First one: I really like this, it's not immediate but there's a vocal line about 35s in where it starts making sense. Whoever wrote this really knows their harmony... yes the lift you mention, but I also just really like the main chord progression it sits on I also like the sort of "dreamy" vibe, it's not super fast and sort of floats. I find Kpop's ability to seem "gentle", regardless of style, fascinating

There are really interesting rhythmic ideas happening in almost every element of it. It doesn't look like a video was ever made for this, which is a total crime. @Cognessence@social.linux.pizza Hey I really like this, the way it's them doing a dub sound. V surprising - BTS are one of the reasons I consciously avoided Kpop and didn't get it for ages, I couldn't stand their pop stuff. But this is really really ace. I also like how it's not entirely atonal, the chord changes implied, it's still pop of course. Awesome video too. I've seen people talking about how they are actually a hiphop act, their early rap material is the best stuff etc, and how they diluted it later.
