@mjg59 I completely agree, but I'd add a couple of things... if you understand the code, then LLMs are just providing acceleration to your efforts. Also, solving problems locally for yourself is great, but there's no reason why you shouldn't share the solution in case it helps someone else. Just be transparent about the possible quality concerns.

I've been trying to set up a new homelab server for a while. I've tried Talos Linux, but can't seem to get it to work with the setup I need, so now I'm off to try NixOS. Good thing I'm using OpenTofu so I don't have to start from scratch.

I'm trying to use Cilium for CNI & Gateway API so I can route some pods through different VPNs, and setting that up just seems to break the initial Talos setup.

If anyone's got good experience with Talos and wants to share let me know.

Since I'm into pretty much everything tech and smart home related, it might be surprising that I'm not overly keen on getting a smart meter. The opportunity to hike prices up by the minute doesn't fill me with joy, like landline phonecalls in the 90s. It appears the issue is being forced upon us though, by then getting rid of the infrastructure which powers. Economy7 meters... @dhepworth@allthingstech.social IMO identity federation is a separate topic. I can see the convenience of being able to comment from Mastodon as a toot, but there could be many differences to how it's displayed on the target site, or how threading works on that site.

Personally, I'd rather go /too/ the other site and post using its native tools. Notifications could be aggregated into Mastodon when replies or mentions happen, but again might not display correctly, but at that point I'd probably understand why.

I can see using the same identity everywhere as being a useful thing, but having any instance of any ActivityPub implementation be able to potentially spam you is problematic. I remember the pingback feature of blogs which constantly got abused before everyone disabled it.

Can anyone recommend a wired (no wifi) gigabit throughput edge router for home FTTP use? Needs to be able to do VLANs (keep IoT separate) and useful if it can also connect to a VPN. Ideally also an SFP port, but not essential.

It will be replacing an EdgeRouter X, which isn't really capable of 1gbps throughout.

@SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange I was taught that it's the safest extreme sport. There's the regular parachute, and if that fails there's a spare, which will automatically open if necessary.

I was, however, also taught that if both parachutes fail, tie your shoe laces... it won't help but it'll take your mind off it.

@rcadden@mastodon.social I hardly use FB (just a couple of groups which I can't find elsewhere) but what I'm finding difficult to replace from Twitter is the ability to get quick replies from companies. Some companies (eg. Dell) can do the entire end-to-end customer service process through Twitter DMs.

I heard a bit about the #openai chatbot earlier. I thought I'd see what kind of code it can generate. It appears to be quite competent. Not sure it got the one in the screenshot correct, but it managed to write a script which to post the weather to Mastodon.
