TIL'ed that in Python you can override the division operator and that it doesn't have to return a float. Pathlib uses this to let you use forward slashes outside of strings!

I set up the #homeassistant macOS app to monitor when my webcam is on and then set a warning notification on the Inovelli Blue zigbee light switch outside the door. https://community.home-assistant.io/t/control-leds-and-led-effects-on-inovelli-black-red-blue-and-white-series-devices-by-floor-area-group-device-id-or-entity/681056 made it easy!

I'm sad to see that the DA has gated the Drupal CMS desktop app behind a signup from their “getting started” docs. Luckily it's not complete, and there's a different page, but it’s the most direct way someone discovering Drupal CMS will see it.

I just got duped to install malware instead of Claude Code. Code signing blocked it (I think). Luckily, this is in a VM so I can reset it. But it gave me a real shock as to how bad default Google is these days (I use Kagi which has no ads, plus an adblocker).

Our laws should be updated so that if a website takes money in exchange for ad placement, they should be responsible if that ad leads users to obvious harm or scams.

This is from our taxpayer-funded public broadcaster.

@christianselig@mastodon.social You reminded me, by default the switches have a short delay (configurable) to allow binding actions to a double-tap. As well, the lights and switches default to a smooth fade for the lights. You can turn those both off if you prefer speed over smoothness.

@christianselig@mastodon.social Oh, and normal latency is very good (feels instant, even with dimming), but because it's 2.4GHz you can have occasional glitches. I've seen that at times with 900MHz and 433MHz so 🤷

I'm using Home Assistant + zigbee2mqtt, but ZHA should work too. Lots of great docs on the Inovelli website!

@christianselig@mastodon.social Just did the deep dive on this as a part of a reno. I ended up with Hue + Inovelli Blue (Zigbee) 2-1 switches. They support "smart mode" and direct device and group binding so if your hub is down the buttons still work. There's no Caseta solution if you want colour temp changing. Matter / Thread direct binding is not broadly supported yet. I'd had 1 switch before, and just set up the basement with 11 switches and ~25 Hue lights yesterday, so long term testing TBD.

@GavinCampbell@hometech.social Three fingers up feels like an easier interaction than left and right to switch. I've seen folks have serious issues triggering the server switch gesture before, I hope this solves that!

I don't blame Anthropic or Mona for this, it's a UI pattern #apple has pushed in #macos. Bring back window title bars!

@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie I don't see this as anything long-term - the goal isn't to get people to change systems, but to raise another signal internally at Apple. Actually changing ecosystems is typically aligned with hardware purchases, which is inherently hard to do with coordination.

I've been thinking about the decline in UI and software quality in #apple products, particularly #macos. How can customers express their frustration in a way Apple will actually listen?

I think the target should be the unit that they care about the most: Services. (1/4)

Things that bother me about Thread + Matter:

1. Matter 1.4 requires thread border routers (TBRs) to offer internet access (via NAT64).
2. Most TBRs either have NAT64 on with no way to disable (Apple, I think Google and Amazon too?), or have it on by default (IKEA). None have the option to disable internet at the TBR for specific devices.
3. While Matter 1.4 requires Thread devices to work without internet, "work" only means core features.
