@Drmowinckels @hrbrmstr @hye Haha, I’ll certainly remember to check the docs before asking a question again :) I normally do, but I was pretty confident in my understanding that data frames are just constrained lists, and knew that, e.g., tibble() will check names, but didn’t even think to see if data.frame() did the same. Also sometimes I post questions like this as an almost rhetorical device. If I have a question about #rstats, I can be pretty certain that it also confuses many of my colleagues in psych education.

Does anyone know why data.frame() won't let you name a column with a minus symbol? #rstats

@esdalmaijer @emma_cogdev Oh, hyperfocus is my superpower. It's a good thing I can get 12-18 hours of work done in a 6-hour hypoerfocus session, but it's been taking a greater toll on me lately.

@jorgeapenas@ecoevo.social Haha, I did that for years in the early 2000s :) I'd love to move all my workflow to plain text files and markdown > pandoc, but unfortunately working with other people means endless word and excel documents.

I'm starting to wonder if I might have ADHD tendencies. Word takes so long to open files now, I regularly find myself distracted by another task while waiting literally 1-3 minutes for a simple doc file to open off OneDrive, and then remember what I was intending to do 15-60 minutes later. (This, coupled with the horrific search on outlook, is just fatal for my ability to do a bunch of small administrative tasks.)

In case it's useful for anyone else, here is the template I send students when they ask for a reference. It's really useful for getting the factual details, especially when I haven't seen the student for a few years, then I can add in evaluation and specific examples.

Reference for {YOUR NAME},

I have known {YOUR NAME, a student in {DEGREE} from the University of Glasgow, since {DATE} in my capacity as their {dissertation supervisor/instructor/etc} and as a professor based in the School of Psychology & Neuroscience at the University of Glasgow. I am writing this reference about their suitability for {PROGRAMME} at {LOCATION}.

• Details of thesis title/topic or course content
• Grade on thesis or course (if known)
• Degree classification (if known)
• Any other skills/qualities you want me to emphasise (e.g., R skills, specific topic knowledge, interpersonal skills)
