@mttaggart@infosec.exchange My bad on my assumptions. Sorry for that, maybe I didn’t pay enough attention. About the weapon, I think it’s an overly simplistic metaphor. Duty of care? Well, ok, what about caring about the colleagues that are being fired because of “productivity gains” which is basically slop at scale? Using the weapon? The more you use the weapon the more you ruin things for you and for others. I don’t know man.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange I’ve been following you for some time, I’m not attacking you. Just saying that you seem semi-open to the possibility of engaging in this new way of working. And I understand it, I’m compelled to use AI in my day-to-day work, we are all trapped. But I’m working in a plan to pivot aggressively. But worry not, I know what’s your stance and I share it partially. You’re more balanced than I am tho.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange Maybe security engineers like your see it differently, but for web and other kind of developers we used, and some of us still do, consider our work creative, exciting and stimulating intellectually. If you take that out you only leave the misery of the corporate politics and pure brain rot. I’m sure that you can understand that this is not about privilege, it’s about not falling into literal depression. Most of us were in love with our work.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange I’m not doubting my competence nor yours. I’m just saying that LLMs becoming the norm is a strong signal of an industry becoming rotten. No privilege here, there are trades, there is entrepreneurship, there is pursuing another career etc. I will always try to align my values with my livelihood. But that’s me.

@JustinDerrick@mstdn.ca @GrahamDowns@mastodon.africa I believe that the solution to that is to promote self-hosting way more. Of course, that requires that almost every user becomes tech-savvy. For example, I’m the admin of this tiny instance, I just have my wife and friends with me. I also self-host Peertube. One tech-savvy user per 5 that aren’t, max costs 5-10$ split between 3-5 users (we all have enabled automatic post deletion). Seems like a good deal.

Look at older protocols like IRC, or at decentralized social media, and you'll notice something they have in common: neither one is popular. They get dismissed as obsolete, but not because they're inconvenient or broken. They work fine. The real problem is that they aren't profitable. There's no way for a corporation to sit in the middle of them and extract value from the people using them.

@glyph@mastodon.social My bad, I misunderstood that paragraph’s idea by reading diagonally and fast. But I disagree, the only viable use of LLMs is multiline (5-10 max) autocomplete after extensive training with a specific repo tbh. They’re just glorified autocomplete, any other use out of this is pure brain rot that isn’t far from Markov chains garbage.

She suggests there’s a “right way” of doing LLMs. This kind of person doesn’t learn anything, they still think it’s “a tool”. They still jerk off to the false and despicable idea of compressing days of work in seconds regarding creative endeavors.
