I use this iPad for one thing and one thing only: Running "Garmin Pilot" in my cockpit.
I was trying to troubleshoot why I keep randomly finding it in my flight bag with the battery drained, despite it always being at or near 100% when I shut down.
It turns out that I was "powering it off" with it still connected, then unplugging it and putting it my flight bag while it was in the middle of that reboot loop. So it would power up *and just stay that way* in my flight bag. For days.
So now I have to make a conscious effort to unplug it first... wait for an undetermined amount of time, THEN power it off before putting it away.
This is dumb.
It is apparently impossible to power off an iPad if it's plugged in. This makes me irrationally angry.

This year seems to be a rare "population surge" year for the California tortoiseshell butterfly. We saw *hundreds* of them on our hike in Carson Valley.
They would come flying through the woods in a straight line, like they were all on the way to somewhere in a hurry. I thought maybe they were migratory, but no- it turns out this is just something that particular butterfly does once every 5-10 years or so for reasons unknown. 🤯🦋

@evacide@hachyderm.io I just spent four days in jury duty on a DV case. It was a simple, obvious case with a mountain of evidence. It took four days because two of those types made it onto the jury and prevented us from reaching a unanimous verdict on 2 of the three counts with such infallible logic as:
"I can see convicting a man of a felony on just the word of a woman"
and
"Sure, we have the 911 recordings and body cam video and photographs of the injuries and expert witness testimony, but I'm still worried she could be making it up..."
I'm done with humans for a while.
Let those among us who haven't quaffed some hooch while firing gel pellets from the back of a moving vehicular automaton cast the first stone...

Folks. Listen. I'm going to do a little bit of critical thinking on your behalf:
If you know someone who lives in a relatively small community, and something from that community makes the national news, I guarantee the person you know in that community already knows about it. They likely knew about it days or weeks (or months) prior to it making the national news.
So you don't need to ask them if they know about it. Really. (And they've already been asked by everyone else they know.)

I should have taken a photo for a mastodon post, but:
TIL never leave a PoE Ethernet cable connected if it's possibly going to be exposed to moisture or a solvent, &etc
Unlike the rest of low voltage Ethernet, the differential between the two 48VAC pins for PoE is enough to cause arcing and even works great with a solution to nicely oxidize the connector pins.
I removed my PoE cameras and taped off the connectors to get our house painted, but I didn't disconnect the switch. As a result, all the connectors have black marks around two of the pins and the pins are bright green.
Thankfully I was able to resuscitate them with some contact cleaner and a pen knife. Now they're reconnected (and coated in No 4 dielectric grease) and up and running again, but that was quite the hassle for a minute.
Good lord there are enough California Governor candidates in the primary to fill a PubG Battle Royale match.

The first half of the advice about PPD and buckets to contain smoke grenades is 👍 though

@tezoatlipoca@mas.to @fribbledom@mastodon.social For me, it's that I eventually reached a sort of zen realization that adding the complexity / layers of a "debugger" actually increases both the entropy and time needed to find most problems.
In many cases, simple trace / print statements / code instrumentation puts you "closer to the problem".
Debuggers do have their place though.
