[ (c) WEYLAND-YUTANI CORP. - BUILDING BETTER WORLDS ]

Carbon-based developer, KM project manager and tech writer. FOSS and openness are my mantra but I still seem to be a bearable person.

Tribalist techno-anarchist before and after it was cool. I metaphorically still live in the Zion Cluster. On the fediverse since 2017.

Permacomputing and collapse computing believer. A love for Lisp and Assembly, even if it's clear they don't love back. Currently going back to "old" things like C and BSD.

My larius is a postdigital bear. He/him is ok.
Feel free to reply to anything I toot.

The uncanny side of all this AI (generative, agentic, physical, whatever) tech is that it basically see the user (that is, us) as a finite and determinate quantity. You think, behave, like, desire, in a specific way that algorithms will eventually quantify and model. Then, you're not supposed to change. In some way, you're even not allowed to change, outside of a very limited range.

You're like a shopfloor machine: just be a specific version of the generic human model, where being stable is good and change is a system degradation.

I think this is not a mistake: it's a state of mind. Techbros and their pathetic stans would really like people to be like deterministic, manageable, expendable machines. And it shows, in the platforms they create.

The more you enshittify things, the more creative people will develop sustainable alternatives.

Because this is how societies works: in the end people fuck sociopaths all the times.

@elena Naaah. I’m just the average digital guy trying to have fun. Ignoring AI costs nothing to me. If I were a professional coder, I’d probably be much less heroic. Being able to ignore hype is, partly, a privilege. We must be honest about it.

@elena I’m doing my best to ignore genai coding hype, it’s background noise at this point. Slop machine believers can’t be saved, so well, whatever. It’s not my game. I spent some time studying and testing LLMs, also implementing them locally. So now I have a clear idea of what they can do for me: almost nothing in general and surely nothing to increase my fun level. I also wanted to spread some little knowledge about “remotely sustainable ways to use small AI”, but it’s a waste of time. People are simply not interested. I decided not to support projects “proudly AI powered” and I’m hiding in my own niche of coding craftsmanship, learning new things the hard way because this is where the fun is. I know this stance means leaving behind many interesting pieces of software. Maybe even mainstream Linux, since there are too many hyped techbros and aspiring AI sycophants in its circles. But still. I love tech and I want it to always be fun for me. The good part: there are gazillions of things to do and play with, while blissfully ignoring the nasty stuff happening around us. We’re not forced to be mainstream.

Just wanted to underline that European Parliament's IT department blocked AI functions on smartphones and tablets used by MoPs and their staff. "We cannot be sure AI won't cause data leaks" it's more or less what IT people said.

There's a story about that on Poltico: https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-parliament-blocks-ai-features-over-cyber-privacy-fears/

AI features on EU devices sent data to cloud, prompting the Parliament’s IT support to switch them off.

Democratize money systems -> digital currency frauds Democratize art market -> NFTs Now is “democratize software creation” which we already know it doesn’t work because we’ve been talking about “citizen developers” for at least ten years. But VCs are already blabbing about the “YouTube moment” of software (we all can be creators) and there’s a lot of potential money involved.

@OtaK_@hachyderm.io @matzipan@hachyderm.io @lina@vt.social I understand that maintaining the kernel is a burden and this exacerbates anything that remotely looks like - or can be perceived as - a technological or personal attack. That said, the prevalent (as it seems now) reaction to the Rust for Linux project is... problematic. I love Linux and I think it saved my digital life and mental sanity, but it's not a religion. Code is not a god. I do not specifically love Rust or Rustaceans, but at this point it's clear the language won't go away - if this is what somebody thinks or hopes - and I'm wondering if a better path is starting from almost scratch and use Rust as a base for a new Linux-compatible OS. Many IT things are now changing fast, a new and safer OS wouldn't be so hard to accept. For sure, all this drama gives more strength - if needed - to the old "bearded guy with suspenders" trope :ablobglitch:

@matzipan@hachyderm.io @lina@vt.social Yup. Rust is the (quite) new shiny kid who just joined the classroom and a bit of love/hate reactions are expected. Also, all the “C is unsafe, even the Government says so” drama hasn’t helped. Many people felt attacked in their development beliefs. And felt suddenly old and deprecated as their code or the code they like. But, well, Rust is on the rise and, all summed up, this should be a good thing. That said, most of the problems in IT don’t come from the language you choose but from software chains dependencies and complexity. Almost everyone today is trained to look at one or two trees and completely misses the forest.
