Many people felt attacked in their development beliefs.
I think that personally that's the crux of the issue. Way too many people are dogmatists with their language/platform of choice, while the dogma should be "quality and correctness above all", especially for a project like the Linux Kernel.
Not being able to accept being challenged in your beliefs IMO means that the foundation of said beliefs is not that solid :/
