@stragu@mastodon.indie.host @DrJLecter@beige.party yes, just film containers, and it's quite common to use those for the small birds yes. AFAIK there's no official bird weighing equipment out there, so most of us just use random things that fit birds. Have also seen toilet rolls and different sized plastic soda bottles (with the top part cut off). Another option is to hang them in a bag on a spring scale, but I've myself only seen that used for larger birds that aren't as easy to fit on a traditional scale.

@paul_cS@mastodon.social should not be too stressful no! they're only in there for a matter of seconds, and it's the last thing we do before releasing them - entire banding process goes quite quickly, and they're inside a dark bag (calms them down) until we handle them

Glaucous gull youngster, in its second calendar year. One of my favorite bird/gull species. They overwinter in the north of Norway, and having them in town the past few months has been an absolute blessing.

Their Dutch name is “Grote Burgemeester” aka “large mayor”, because of their big size and big bossy personality. Definitely a fitting name if you’ve ever seen them in action, they’re tough as hell.

Als their Norwegian name is “Polarmåke”/“Polar gull”, matching their scientific name “Larus hyperboreus” (“gull of the high north”), while their English name glaucous gull refers to their color.

The king eider has arrived in town 🥰

The past few days a male king eider has been hanging out with a flock of around 30 steller's eiders in the harbor. Also long-tailed ducks and common eiders around.
