@bloor@bloor.tw looking at my stats over the last 90 days, 1066 kWh consumed and 199 kWh regen. I do quite a lot of motorway driving too where there’s relatively little regen. I have flappy paddles to adjust regen level which is brilliant and also feels like the future.

Impressed with the other scale solar system at #emfcamp over by the planetarium - they’ve gone bigger on planet diameter and compressed the distance scale but the effect of putting them closer together is delightful. Their painting is better than mine! I love that they’ve included the moon too.

So my plan to put the remaining 2 #emfcamp scale solar system planets on the way to the Eastnor Obelisk path has been foiled by access to the track being closed. As a result I am staging an EMF takeover of the IAU and cancelling Neptune’s status as a planet too. If Pluto has to be a “dwarf planet” even though it sometimes orbits closer than Neptune does then I think Neptune can also be cut off for not trying hard enough.

@bloor@bloor.tw And to expand on that because it is vague: There's a cost to existing creator livelihoods; to society at large as freely available info is taken away because it's too expensive to keep available; to the individual who get so into AI they can't comprehend that others aren't interested and become insufferable; to those who get in too deep and end up with some sort of psychosis and those who become so reliant on it that they lose their existing skills.

To answer your specific question, I personally think that's OK because it's an artist creating something new even if it is directly inspired by existing media. It's creative, thoughtful and requires time and skills that are not easy to learn. I imagine Disney might disagree though. A GenAI image doesn't have any of that, it's just creating a statistically plausible average for your prompt based on the material it's been trained on, and doing so causes harm.

@bloor@bloor.tw perhaps less so but a lot of the open models are still pretty tainted by the training process. At least you’re not helping OpenAI usage numbers then. I don’t know for sure if any of those are also contributing to the ongoing scraping nightmare but the whole field is a dodgy mess and I don’t want anything to do with it.

@bloor@bloor.tw I normally don’t comment on things like this but I do personally find it disappointing when people I know and respect use GenAI even if it is just for throwaway jokes. “Slop” aside, the ethical and environmental issues are real, not to mention the ongoing financial and supply chain fuckery.

@tommorris@mastodon.social it’s wild to me that they still haven’t figured out that if you want to show leadership you need to demonstrate what you stand for and what we could have, not just constantly being against whatever anyone else says.
There is something delightful about working on something fiddly that’s intended to be maintained / repaired, and for which a detailed service manual is available. Overtightened screw at a previous (professional) service had left sewing machine needle threader broken. Just enough clearance to replace with M2.5 nut and bolt bypassing ruined threads in the plastic clamp. The newer version replaces this plastic fitting with a metal one, but you have to buy and swap the whole needle assembly.
