"So the Kid has an old laptop from circa 2005 running Ubuntu Mate, and they discovered via Tumblr that a Warrior Cats game they played as a child is still out there .. found the GitHub for a Linux compatible version, and installed it from command line, without my help. My work here is done."

FOSS appreciation post: As a Person Who Uses Linux for personal computing, it is pretty furiously triggering when I'm required to use non Linux devices to Do Things. For example when my kid needs adobe for their college classes, or when I want to simply *play an mkv file* on my MacBook at work. To most people in my life I'm an irascible crank about it, just for wanting things to, I dunno, be easy and under my control. Margaret Killjoy this week: "Computers used to make us more free but now they make us less free" seemed wrong to me until I considered how it feels to step outside Linux world.

Morning of the fifth day of state testing in my school today. Everyone is exhausted, teachers and students and security and admins. I'm on hall duty, just observing the lovely humanity of teachers greeting the kids, fist bumps and hugs and quiet words of encouragement, taking on the task of loving other people's children through a rough week in the middle of a rough year in a rough world. The kind of kindness that test scores and data will never manage to capture, but I am so grateful for my career and colleagues today.

@VeroniqueB99 Whether or not the US ever gets back to "normal," this is the energy that ought to be held towards anyone who supported trump, from the ones who worked in the administration down to the codger up the street with a sign on his lawn. The rest of their lives, I hope they live in fear that someone will find out they were maga. In 2048 I want to read about a 63 year old middle manager on the verge of retirement getting canned because his employer finds out he worked for doge.

@justdude When we switched to apple products last year in my school, I asked my IT guy what was happening w all the old Dell laptops and he just looked sad. The district has no plan to dispose of them and he'd basically been hoarding them in a closet. He brings me five a week now and I put Ubuntu mate on there and hand them out to kids. I've given out maybe 70 or so now, and have a weekly lunch bunch to troubleshoot and play around
