@dougmerritt Things like this have been said before and it really dismisses the people's lived experience rather than being inclusive, in my and many others https://www.divergentpod.com/blog/ep-132 https://enna.org/everybody-is-on-the-spectrum-microaggression/ (these are about autism specifically -- and it has been said to me before by someone who ended up making me homeless -- but applies to the more general statement). Everybody's brain is different, yes, but there is a large percentage closer to the mean and people who are outliers. It's fuzzy and complicated but it's real. The outliers face real socioeconomic consequences in this ableist world , and real violence. "Neurodivergent" isn't the opposite of something like neuro-homogenous, there's variation in the norm and nobody has the same brain. Typicality, the norm, is a real thing though, even if the propaganda you mention overemphasizes it, and it does so because it the distribution of power in society is hierarchically structured. It states/enforces that typicality is the *only* thing, which I hear you're arguing against, but your post comes off to me as erasure of the people whose brains significantly deviate from the norm. I process information, like short videos, way different than most people around me, I stim and do echolalia in places where no one else is, my affect is flat, my hands shake, I almost crash my bike when someone goes by with a flashing tailight, etc etc. I've had psychometric tests that said straight up that I'm impaired in some things that people take for granted like executive functions (although rly good at repeating number strings apparently), I've faced real challenges and done unusual things that are interesting and cool because of it, and I'm never worried about it. I'm proudly taking space, asserting myself by talking about my experience.

@dougmerritt Good question because I don't think there are ads on shorts, or at least it doesn't repeat them. Masto vids also loop, it seems to be "what the people want" but I just want to watch something once even if it's 15 seconds long, unless it's really dense or confusing

I don't know if it's a neurodivergence thing but I really don't like how all short vids loop by default now (since Vine?), and don't really understand why folks on the bus or where ever will watch the same video over and over. Apperently it gives the content creators more views -> more money though, so enabling it makes sense

"SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Coherence is theorized to facilitate information transfer across cerebral space by providing a convenient electrophysiological mechanism to modulate membrane potentials in spatiotemporally complex patterns. Our work uses a multiscale approach to evaluate the spatial reach of phase coherence and spike-field coherence during cognitive tasks in humans. Locally, coherence can reach up to 3 cm around a given area of neocortex. The spectral properties of coherence revealed that alpha phase-field and spike-field coherence were higher within ranges <2 cm, whereas lower-frequency delta coherence was higher for contacts farther away. Spatiotemporally shared information (i.e., coherence) across neocortex seems to reach farther than field potentials alone."

@yoginho@spore.social I'm pretty sure the author leans towards believing the universe is fundamentally computational, -- because there are so many things are algorithmically compressible, which are unlikely to be generated by random analog systems -- so definitely keep an eye out for biases and implicit assumptions like Laplace's demon, but it's at least a detailed explanation of that point of view. He mentions it that could be nondeterministic, mostly random and analog with occasional order, but if it is deterministic it has to be algorithmic p.s., I'm interested to read more of your project. Its focus on agency made me think of Karen Barad's "agential realism" theory https://www.dukeupress.edu/Meeting-the-Universe-Halfway/

I've also taken a course by pancomputationalist Hector Zenil, who has some interesting work on the possibility of an algorithmic nature to the universe and biology, and is a colleague of Stephen Wolfram. The idea goes back farther than the 80's, to Konrad Zuse's 1969 book "Calculating Space"

There are lots of straightforward papers and books about information theory applied to neuroscience -- I've found about 22 so far and am starting to dig through them -- but understanding the hisorical context and motivations of it and deconstructing the definition of information felt to be of epistemological value. These conversations end up coming down to preferences and biases: do you like thinking through a computational lens or not? Someone who does might point out how neurons are fundamentally universal Turing machines and someone who doesn't might not think that's relevant (i.e., to psychology and behavior, or neurology/medicine). I felt impelled to zoom out a bit

BTW, your second seems to lead to a paper on applying deep learning to covid research, is that what you meant to post?

For neuroscience in general, maybe Shun'ichi Amari's earlier work on neural networks and information geometry would give a picture of how information theory got mixed in with neuroscience
