I've been around online since the earlier usenet days when you had to have some chops to know what usenet is (was), and how to get on it. Mastodon right now feels a bit like the good days of usenet, there's some of the same vibe.

Interests: bike maintenance, ebikes, orchids, cymbidiums, weird succulents, gardening in general, security engineering, current events, congressional shenanigans, courthouse shenanigans, US and european politics.

@bert_hubert@fosstodon.org The state of the art of chemical liquid rocket fuels for main propellant has *not* advanced somewhat--they're still using fuels discussed in the book, including the one that Clark's lab eventually determined was slightly the superior, extra-refined kerosene, which became RP1, which is used today in Space-X falcons and heavies. Methane, extensively discussed, is used in Space-X starship engines. SLS and the space shuttle use(d) hydrogen, again extensively discussed. Over 20 years they pretty much wrung dry the high energy compounds that can be created with the peridioc table we have. Iteration and improvement in rocket engines, yes. Main stage fuels, no. I guarantee you every english-speaking professional working with rocket engines and fuels has read this book, and first edition copies are treasured and are selling for over $250 last time I looked. But it's your list, do as you wish, I will not bother you further.

@bert_hubert@fosstodon.org Ignition! by John Clark. History and practice of American research into liquid rocket fuels. Still relevant today, since they ain't making new types of atoms. https://library.sciencemadness.org/library/books/ignition.pdf

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @kevinrns@mstdn.social Individual users can block a domain without having a post from that domain. It involves creating a text csv file of the domains to be blocked, then uploading that file to the "Domain Blocking List" option on one's preferences->imports page. It's not hard, though the process is a bit clumsy. Detailed instructions about halfway down this article: https://medium.com/@geofbard/how-to-block-server-domains-in-mastodon-899b24f8fb6e

@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org @FediTips@social.growyourown.services jordan, you need to review the parable of the scorpion and the frog. Then review facebook having settled for $725 million rather than risk going to trial, after having been accused of selling out its users' data to cambridge analytica to be used by russia to influence the 2016 election. They will sell you out. If you don't use them, don't engage, they have nothing to sell. https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/19/tech/facebook-cambridge-analytica-settlement-application/index.html

@Popehat I'm glad you're taking on this case; keep us posted. It's worth pointing out that 20-year-old Vargas almost certainly didn't come up with this strategy on his own.

@TechConnectify @GottaLaff @jztusk @mastodonmigration @Teri_Kanefield @Popehat @mmasnick @mattblaze What I'd like to see is a "miserable shitbag" flagging option. There exists a subset of users who just are miserable, and want to spread their condition to others, and get affirmation from predicting failure and seeing failure come to fruition. But given the mastodon platform's inability to fix its browser bugs, let alone add new features, that's not going to happen. Perhaps instead we could adopt a practice of hashtag responding to miserable shitbag posts with #miserableshitbag. One could then set up a List subscribed to #miserableshitbag, and spend a few minutes a day muting/blocking those so tagged.
