@pulkomandy@mastodon.tetaneutral.net they start introducing complicated interpolation or nearest neighbour etc in the ”plus rounding” part. I was hoping to use integer tables of precomputed numbers or something, which should be possible. It felt very ”this must have a solution that doesn’t take the shortcut past floats”. My supervisor works on floating point number verification and I have a phobia of floats now.

#pixelgraphics people: I’m thinking of implementing a radar/scanner view of a todo list/calendar with tasks/events placed around me like aliens approaching in Aliens. Obviously the choice for this would be polar coordinates, with angle picked arbitrarily except avoiding overlap and distance picked by time to event/deadline. Now, how does one convert polar coordinates to Cartesian integer pixel coordinates? It seems unnecessarily complicated when computer graphics people online describe it.

On the other hand Dolphin’s ability to add commands to run on selections coupled with the advanced file matching expression is a fantastic way to do what would have been brittle and annoying shell globbing or, worse, an hour of figuring out how to wire find to xargs without it choking the second one of your file names has a space. This is obviously how it should work: immediate visual feedback, text input used where it’s the most efficient (I.e. to specify a pattern).

In general I’m sad that dragging and dropping isn’t more useful on Linux. It’s a crapshoot if applications accept things dropped into them and most applications don’t have a representation for things to drag out of them. Normally I’d assume you could drag open documents, pages from a PDF, and so on.

I’ve been looking for two things missing in the desktop metaphor:

a ”drag rest” window where you can drag and drop files and folders to and have them act as if the drag and drop event was continuous while they rest there and you do something else (usually prepare the landing area)
a visual clipboard with drag and drop

The second thing definitely exists, but probably not in Plasma?

I just heard Cory Doctorow mention that he has cancer (apparently it "seems treatable" so I'm not too worried for him) on the Dreaming against the machine podcast and think I experienced Time in a way I haven't since I was in my dad's workshop in my early 20s and realised one day he'll be dead and I won't know how to use the majority of the tools and machines in there.

Uuuuuh I read some archived versions of Jeff Geerling’s old 2011 posts. Now, I generally think we should let things that old lie.

However; they were still published late 2025, with no revision, and they’re *very* out there. They’re not meaningfully ”personal opinions” either. These are clearly articulated political opinions. This is Daesh [Catholic], more or less.
