@amenonsen@flipping.rocks exactly! there were two variants, a “clinical chemistry” version that was specialized in checking for basic minerals and lipid panels and stuff like that, and an “immunoassay” version that was specialized in antibody testing. both of them could load a sample in, set up a pre-programmed cycle with its stock reagents, and be able to read the result based on the color or transparency or something like that. (i knew more when i was at the job, but i haven’t needed it since 2019, so it’s been a hot minute lol)

my previous job (which was also my last job pre-transition but that’s just a coincidence) involved writing maintenance and diagnostic scripts for a series of medical laboratory analyzers that had been in the market for like 15 years by that point. if you’re in the business you’ll recognize the company name but it’s not important here.

what was important was that as a result of working on these machines, the office had several literal clinical-chemistry labs with several of them set up to do QA and such. i didn’t have to go into the lab very often, but because i did, i had to take all the trainings on how to properly use the lab space. things like proper use of PPE, how to handle a sample, various types of hazards, etc.

one of the most useful ones mentioned the Hierarchy of Hazard Controls: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_hazard_controls

basically, there are tiers of approaches to accommodating a hazard and ensuring the safety of the humans who need to work around them. from most- to least-effective, they are:

physically removing the hazard to render it impossible
substituting a hazardous situation with an equivalent, less-hazardous one
creating a physical separation between the worker and the hazard, like a fume hood or a guard rail
implementing a procedure or a ruleset to manage the hazard, like requiring training
providing Personal Protective Equipment for the workers to mitigate the hazard, like hearing protection or respirators

the early items are considered better than the later ones because they rely less on the attentiveness of the workers to ensure safety. the more you can render a hazard moot, the better work you can perform without having to worry about accommodating a hazardous situation.

one thing i find interesting comparing banana ball to MLB is that the combination of "teams being staffed from minor-league players", “smaller/newer sporting league", and “teams encourages to showboat on the field to accrue trick plays”, errors (in the baseball-stat sense) are more likely to show up. flyaway hits aren't automatically an out, passes aren't always caught, hell, even pitches aren't always caught and throws outside the strike zone are way more common, especially from pitchers trying to trick-pitch

even though the games are streamed in high-quality with league-appropriate stat overlays, shot-for-shot calls aren't always perfect, and pitches and hits don't always have a camera on them at all times

but like, the games are still just plain fun to watch. i watched the back-half of one tonight with my partner, and they remarked how the stadium was still full all the way to the end of the game. it was a minor-league stadium, to be sure, but it says something that every single game for the rest of this season, all the way to the end of september, is already sold out. and i bet the vast majority of them sold out fast

when i cross-posted yesterday's thread to bsky i called banana ball “baseball with a time limit and goofy energy" and i think that really makes it a much easier watch than most other major american sports

(not as chaotic as basketball or hockey, though, i'll give them that)

fascinating new paper that theorizes a broader neurobiological framework for ADHD that points to markers that can be tested and treated and explains more about the symptom cluster than previous models

in summary, the paper introduces a model wherein the brain can’t properly regulate energy for the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for things like planning and impulse control. it can look like not having fuel at all (which leads to more inattentiveness) or only receiving energy in bursts and burning through it all way too fast (which results in the “two weeks of work in eight hours” phenomenon).

by tying all the related experiences together, the paper hopes to create a diagnostic and treatment model that goes further than what we can do today.

okay some updates about compatibility:

the game ran flawlessly on my Bazzite PC, as expected
someone in the GameNative community had a chat with the devs and figured out a way to make the game’s DRM happy (just adding a command-line flag)
with that fix, it runs great on my Thor, so i imagine “known configs” will start circulating with this fix in due time

i could probably keep tinkering on this forever (i still have some TODOs in there to be more clever about picking the right high temperature and time to show in situations like today where the 24-hour high is actually the current temperature) but i’m actually really happy with it as it is really the only thing i don’t like is that i can’t use a Shortcut to populate a watch complication or lock-screen widget, that would be the dream (hence starting this thread by calling it an app request, lol)

remembered that i tried to write a Shortcut to do this a while back, so i cleaned that up so i could demo it and it really demonstrates the usefulness of this framing on a “cold front day”. the weather app claims the high temp is 48°F, but that happened at midnight! my shortcut that just scans the hourly forecast is much more useful because it will show me what it’s actually going to be like today

here’s an app idea that’s been kicking around the back oh my head for a while and probably won’t see the light of day by my hand:

i want a weather app where the at-a-glance view shows the highest and lowest temperatures *in the next 24 hours* rather than in the current midnight-to-midnight span

i live in a dry plains climate, and i frequently need to know whether the temperature is swinging because it’s the normal swing for the season, or because a cold front is coming through and i can’t trust the forecast high
