does anyone with zfs experience have tips on dealing with, uhh, multiple drive failure? i think the data is either unimportant or backed up elsewhere, but i would still like to swap drives over while losing minimal data from the pool.

@x0 @chaucerburnt i mean, llms have access to their own recent output so if the chain of thought says “i better use the regex module” that increases the odds of it using the regex module in a similar way the prompt saying “use the regex module” does.

I‘ve been making more diagrams over the past few years and trying to hone my abilities so it is a bit depressing seeing models come after that skill. and it seems like it would probably be worse if i were younger and didn‘t have as much experience of learning other skills?

@viraptor@cyberplace.social I mean, that makes sense. You don’t need measurements, or even back of the envelope calculations, to know that it‘s faster to drive from LA to NYC than to walk. But part of the pattern I‘m noticing is that there didn‘t seem to be much measuring going on in areas where there‘s uncertainty going on or during the time period when everyone agrees they were worse at coding, like when GitHub Copilot was first released. Or for that matter, comparing using agents to not.

@xgranade @zkat yeah, that’s what’s been bizarre to me as well. i guess many people have done their own trial period but it often seems like there’s an extremely strong presumption it will let you go faster and that’s enough for people to embrace it. like i feel like there was often this idea that if you’re writing a script to replace a manual process you should consider measuring it and make sure you‘re actually saving time but I don’t notice a lot of measuring going on.

advertising that your organization dedicated to adjudicating journalists' claims is staffed with ex-military and ex-intelligence kinda of feels like you're trying to appeal to a child's understanding of what an investigation is.

that being said i think what they're really doing is trying to name people who will seem neutral (or favorable) to technofascists but who they can sell as being picked for their investigative prowess rather than their ideology.

@glyph@mastodon.social The part of this I’m struggling with is that there’s a lot of very same-y code (like, idk, joins or fetching a session token). Is that and most boilerplate sludge? While I don’t really blame people for wanting to, and there’s certainly a lot of cases where good software engineers practice is to reduce it, I do wonder if we as an industry are a bit too dismissive of it. Like a lot of it is practical, straightforward code and the verbosity does help set up context.

@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org i completely agree on the value of physical books in libraries, but in my experience librarians are much more aware of the tradeoffs involved than this article makes it sound like. also, this author's dismissal of gay latino studies seems to be based more on homophobia than actually examining the research in question. (in fairness, the Manchester City Library pulping linked to does sound like a pretty bad call by the librarians or administrators.)
