@Qybat@batchats.net The multimedia is a touch more problematic, since much of it (other than the aforementioned first animated film) are under rather strict modern copyright. 🤔 Checking… 27,423 songs totalling 76.9 days playing 24/7. 409 movies (officially; so not able to share most of these) totalling 245 days played 24/7. 5,261 television episodes (officially for most; some exceptions) totalling 105.8 days 24/7. I used to decrypt iTunes video media in the name of preservation, but that's gotten harder.

@Qybat@batchats.net Some JPEGs I'm processing go from 2.3MiB to 40KiB (blank pages are dumb, or mostly-blank with tiny logo centred on them). Do you have 50TiB handy? … it's … uh … a rather substantial collection. But at least I have gigabit fibre, so it shouldn't take /too/ long. (It'll take too long. Exercising offsite backup restores can take a week or two, and there are things like a copy of Wikipedia, every Popular Mechanics, Encyclopedia Brittanica, Project Gutenberg, &c. in here. Plus multimedia…)

@Qybat@batchats.net In fact, I probably do have that comic. The last two or three months I've been "deep archiving" rather substantial comic collections, and have some non-comic works dating back more than 100 years. (Sister asked me for a medieval manuscript on textiles and clothing manufacture, and within 48h she had it. She couldn't believe it.) Up here in Canada we have "fair dealing", which is a little better than "fair use", but… non-commercial personal development is hard to argue if you share.

@rodhilton@mastodon.social @nickwedig@dice.camp And the argument for "piracy" as preservation has only skyrocketed, as production companies shift their content between streaming providers to maximize profits, giving the shaft to consumers who can't (and aren't) paying subscribers of literally every service. Sure, I haven't been given a perpetual license to X media, but they sure as hell can't stop me. (2TiB+ of YouTube archived so far…)

@jetton@mastodon.online Can wholeheartedly second the "advanced interface" tip. If you've ever seen or used "Tweet Deck" as a client for the bird site, you should be right at home. In that interface, you've got your typical notifications and "home" timeline, but can also add lists of people you've followed (and put into boxes ["help, help, I'm trapped in this box"]) and hashtags as columns. It's dang brilliant.

@chucker@norden.social 🤔 You do realise .NET is just a CLR bytecode runtime, right? By that logic it’s a subset of JVM and .NET and asm.js and x86 by way of… RPython! (Which the Python PHP runtime is built in. It offers multiple back-end targets and inherent optimising JIT, with pluggable memory managers. Though the compile-to-JS idea is quite silly. So is the idea that a Gameboy ROM can also be Python by way of PyGirl. Or Ruby by way of Topaz. Or…)

@ramsey@phpc.social I do apologise! My internal desire for literary reference went too far, as it occasionally does. And I’m not trying to convince you of PHP’s merits or anything; my philosophy is that of practicality beating purity (my original answer was largely in jest) and for practical problems, use the tooling most familiar to you! I had run hosting infrastructure for almost 30 years, exiting that particular specialisation ~10y ago. Many a fun tale of PHP use and abuse. 😉 Glad things have improved!

@ramsey@phpc.social That is completely ignoring the question and the problem it points out. Mandatory doesn't mean it isn't contaminating the calling scope. Last time I checked, it still did. Register_globals hadn't died by then. To be extremely clear: passing in an array to populate did not prevent it from updating the calling scope.

If https://www.php.net/parse_str still contaminates the calling scope on use, even when passing in an array to populate, the answer would seem to be "no". Older example, mysqli_real_escape_string exists. When there was that entire opportunity to finally remove the cruft during the mysql→mysqli API update. It's rare I've walked into a language support channel, asked a question, and has a moderator explicitly tell me it's because the language is bad.

I'll also add that JavaScript is a subset of Python. I haven't needed Node in many years; I run Babel, Babili, autoprefixer, &c., &c. within Python without it. The link I provided was for a PHP implementation in Python; is totally is usable as a template engine like Mako or Genshi. (Blast from the past, that last.) It's just not very good, to put it /mildly/.
