@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io it's interesting to consider *why* AlphaFold is/was good. My take is that 1) protein folding is basically impossible to predict without stochastic methods anyway, 2) close enough to correct is probably fine in a lot of cases because, 3) the outputs still have to be tested against reality. If you synthesise a protein for some practical use and AlphaFold was wrong about how it will fold such that it doesn't work, then it doesn't really matter. AlphaFold being wrong sometimes isn't a dealbreaker because reality is the ultimate arbiter here. Unlike LLMs whose outputs can, in effect, define reality. "Computer says no" and all that.

@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe @zleap@techhub.social I saw somebody say that people love using AI to do other people's jobs, but aren't happy when other people use them to do their jobs. When you don't know what you're doing, you don't notice how poor a job the AI is doing. It's basically the same phenomenon as Gell-Mann Amnesia now that I think about it.

@stevedurbin@toot.wales my musician brother-in-law discovered a great lifehack for getting cheap art: marry a designer/artist. More seriously, my sister was doing event posters for (high school) bands in high school. While I'm not suggesting bands seek out high schoolers for art, I'm sure plenty of college students will happily make a poster for some drinking money.

@chartier@toot.cafe my "favourite" version of this is the fishing industry. Left to their own devices they will literally fish themselves out of business. Fisheries regulations are there to ensure that fisheries continue to exist.

@bewo001 @stefano that's not really the point here. It's less "cloud is bad" and more "relying on a specific company's infrastructure is bad". If the alarm system requires that the company you bought it from stay in business to work, then it doesn't matter if they host on AWS, Azure, or a Dell under Dave's desk.

@syphilia@kafeneio.social @jeremy_pm@mastodon.nz what is the point of this reply? Are you really berating somebody for trying to help the homeless participate in democracy? Because that's what you're doing here. Like, what are mad at? The fact that Jeremy is trying to help someone. The fact that he posted on social media? Congratulations on being a rare example of a reply-gal.

@oscarjiminy@aus.social the conclusion echoes criticisms I've made of ADHD (and neurodivergent) characterization: so much of it is defined by what assessors think is a problem, not what the individual being assessed thinks is a problem. My brother and I were both diagnosed with ADHD as adults. Looking back, the evidence was all there when we were younger but because neither of us "acted out" or noticeably struggled academically it wasn't brought up. Even the name, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is biased towards the impact it has on others. My problem isn't that I lack attention, it's that I lack of control of attention. Sure, that makes it harder to concentrate sometimes, but it also means I miss meals or don't sleep because I can't interrupt myself. Not staying on task is what teachers care about though, so it is what gets focused on.

@DrorBedrack@mastodon.social @infobeautiful@vis.social @ourworldindata@vis.social my thoughts exactly. The news reports on things that are, well, newsworthy. It's worth noting that, according to the chart, COVID deaths were 2% of the deaths, but 5% of the reporting. It's almost like there was something worth reporting on at the time! News media sucks in lots of ways, but "death-related reporting doesn't accurately reflect causes of deaths" is not one of them.

@twifkak@mas.to @timbray@cosocial.ca the RFC does address that using Location and Content-Location headers. Basically allowing a server to save the query and/or the result at a GET-able URI and provide it to the client. Similar to POST-and-redirect but with better-defined semantics.

@semitones@tiny.tilde.website @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz the article isn't quite clear, but my understanding is that a lot of these metals are distributed in low amounts basically everywhere in the crust. While America almost certainly has the minerals, developing the production chains necessary will take years, if not decades. So the issue is that China is the only significant source of these metals and the impact of their shortage is felt now.
