@Furthering@convo.casa I've read one (1) essay of hers from the 90s. I found it in the reading room of a London library. The only reason I'd heard of her was because she visited Macron at the Elysée (he had namedropped her before and later seemed touched by her death, he went to Budapest and put a stone on her grave). @elCelio Not disputing that, I would just caution against thinking those are two ideology-motivated sworn enemy mafioso clans. They're not. Balkan politics are uh... Well. Not easily mapped on Russia and anti-Russia politics., but rather a simple numbers game in the end. Putin can't afford all those hungry mouths, our tax money funneled via EU funds will continue to outbid him.

@euobserver It feels odd to me to even notice this given the super expert status of the author, but it's bizarre to be fist-pumping through half of this article filled with statements I find brilliant:

A lot of "the EU should do this and that" work is brilliant but weirdly siloed in like that.

@_elena Je suis européenne, et je n'ai aucune intention de créer du contenu ni de contribuer à remplir les poches d'oligarques étrangers qui veulent détruire notre Union. Je suis très reconnaissante envers toutes les personnes qui consacrent souvent du temps, des efforts et de l'argent à titre bénévole pour coder et modérer un réseau social européen. Cela ne devrait pas être un fardeau qu'elles portent seules.

@Ulmo @EUCommission The Council of Europe is not an EU institution. The European Council = our heads of state and government, the executive decider of EVERYTHING in the European Union. They are "Brussels", no joke. That's the point, not that the decisions of our national governments are not planned. Read again: our governments are the EU, they are "Brussels", they make these guidelines, they make these decisions, there is no EU or Brussels as an external force alien to them.

@Ulmo @EUCommission Monetary (and there are caveats there too, on top of PL et al being out) is Frankfurt. On everything else, the guidelines on how resources should be used are written by lower level experts and advisors as they are in every administration anywhere, but the guidelines are decided by the member states governments without whom NOTHING moves in the EU. The ultimate decision maker is in the hummus room of the European Council. "Brussels"=member states, so... a disfrutar lo votado.

@Ulmo @EUCommission I think we're in agreement on a lot here, probably north of 90% (there's emergency healthcare and there's health-nice-to-haves where market competition can and probably has improved outcomes, but I genuinely defer to your expertise). I mentioned Ayuso because at the core of my disagreement is this: "driven by Brussels". Who is "Brussels", particularly for health, foreign policy, taxation, defence, etc.?

@estela @mariapc Recuerdo que me gustó mientras lo leía, pero poca cosa más. Pero ahora que cada vez que leo un libro escrito por señoros del mundo académico (y no solo los de su generación) pongo los ojos en blanco ante su pomposa presunción y su infantil incapacidad para crear personajes femeninos que no sean meros tetas ambulantes, me doy cuenta de que lo que probablemente me gustaba de su escritura era que ella también se burlaba de esos tipos.

@jeffreyb @EUCommission They don't teach proper civics nor EU history in schools at national level and it shows. It's a pity that we don't have at least a miniseries about how Jean & Bob made it happen against all (considerable) odds because it was anything but smooth sailing. The book works because Giuliano Da Empoli is a bright guy who thinks deeply about Europe and the darkness in men's souls, particularly middle-aged men who are consiglieres of men in power. Surkov himself is really not that interesting of a guy and, as the last four years have proven, Putin really is just a m... vertically-challenged, brain-rotten boomer obsessed with the US, the puppet show satirists were right. Baranov in the book is interesting because da Empoli projects a Dark Me onto him.

Anybody voting for an EPP party is a laughing stock to me personally, but there's only one country in the EU which renders all economic stats in the EU useless to the point that we have to exclude it from calculations. It does so because it serves its American corporate masters, so yeah, we point and laugh at it.

@szewek @PaulaToThePeople @leavex First social media destroyed the financial model of journalism, which is where I can have sympathy, we suddenly all wanted news for free. And THEN the algorithm genuinely shredded most journalists' brains. Watching them on twitter during the pandemic was a :saddercat: moment. And some politicians', like Radek Sikorski or our Minister of Transport. I'm convinced if twitter were banned in the EU both would download a VPN and inject it in their veins like Medvedev.
