@AutumnWyvern@dragon.style i had absolute WORST experience in one of these, because they posted signs saying they dont take cash, but NOTHING saying youre expected to have a smartphone with a camera, a software stack to parse a qr code into a url, and your own internet access to open that url. luckily i had my pinephone with me and a credit card (neither of which were things i necessarily carry). pinephone couldn't scan the code, but luckily the audio stack was working for once and i eventually found a number to call and have them tell me the actual url over the phone, whereupon i was able to get out after paying for an hour of parking in downtown la, all of which had been spent looking in vain for an employee on site. @saphire@dragon.style i have gotten OBVIOUS indistinguishable-from-scams calls etc that were not in fact scams. combine that with some manufactured urgency and its basically a choice between falling for a scam eventually or missing something genuine eventually

@saphire@dragon.style this is a lil off your topic but i got a phishing text the other day like "Dick Sporting Goods order tecieved! Track at dickssportinggoods.smth.io. STOP to opt out!" or something. And that's clearly phishing. And the fact its so clearly phishing and i still am not sure it actually was (and not like a wrong number or something - i dont have any account that could do this) disturbs me much more than the phishing.

@hacks4pancakes also the really cool linear algebra doer scanner needs do to so much linear algebra to do a scan it ends up costing 20 grand so idk about the economics of that. Most security holes dont even come from bugs they come from doing something that might be ok in one context but not ok in another, right? Is ai better at *not* doing that?

Why is this revolutionary? It doesnt change how you use tools: they give time, not skill. Yes even without skill you can spam a tool at something and have things happen but youre flying blind and the reason why it wasnt enough to be a script kiddie 10 years ago still apply even when your VERYYY expensive rube goldberg linear algebra doer works as a good scanner

@anildash@me.dm the start of the open web wasnt something I was around for but I imagine it was a core of smart nerds inspired to be part of something new and different who created an inertial snowball rooted in openness, eventually pulling in a far larger number of people and hustlers until the latter blew it up and now we're a scattered mass of billions of people at the bottom of the hill, and the only scenario where we have an inertial openness core again is to find a new hill to roll it down

@anildash@me.dm My expectation is a new, less centralized internet will form. Possibly not http or even tcp/ip, almost midway between internet and sneakernet. More reliant on human networking to establish collaborations - making this slop spamming obsolete - and more dependent on geography for content discovery - making scraping, malicious or otherwise, largely obsolete at least in the way its been done before. In short: less open, but more trusting and more human
Edit: I am picturing meshtastic, but it could be something similar or a combination of things

@anildash@me.dm agree with your diagnosis but not the prescription. Conditions that brought about the seemingly impossible open web do not exist now that it has matured. I dont know what collective action could even be mobilized toward specifically, vis-a-vis preserving what's been, but even that is largely moot imo because the userbase of the modern internet is such a different set of cats to herd. Im a little less eager to prioritize learning "integrating ai" in my studies because I expect these huge datacenter llms to basically stop existing within like a year or two and leave us with a lot of smaller more efficient self-hostable ones so that'll be a whole new thing to learn anyway. I'm living in the future, not the past. I will brush up on nvidia-docker
I wonder if litigation around os age verification and foss OSes (especially the more raw arch/gentoo crowd) could lead to a distinction of "operating system" vs mere "operating system components" that another party must assemble to be considered an operating system legally, with much of the linux space considered part of the latter
