An old techie who occasionally uses new tech. Teacher by trade. Psychology and Critical Thinking are my subjects, YMMV.

I don't give a flying fig who you have relationships with, what you do in your bedroom or what you do in your church, as long as you don't expect me or anyone else to think, do or believe as you do.

I used to say that all my cultural references are 20+ years old, but that is now out of date. All my cultural references are from the previous century.

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st Absolutely! I have arthritic knees. I can ride a bike for hours, but standing for more than a few minutes is agony. But being an otherwise healthy male, there is an unstated assumption that I should be the one to stand, allowing others to sit when seating is limited, which it almost always is.

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org Well, that does answer that. :-) Of course I can't know how many people used the feature, just know I did. :-) I will agree there were many "hallucinations" and honestly some of the categories were a bit hilarious (if it was a picture of a person, there might be a tag for "arm" or "torso"). Discoverability (an interesting concept in itself) is (for me at least, I assume others) a problem in large data sets such as this (and the Archive as a whole). Obviously, this is one reason people like algorithmic feeds, it brings up "new, related stuff automatically." Which is a great thing is the feed is honest in some way. Yes, I can search for a specific thing and browse, but sometimes just don't know where to start. The Public Domain Review has a really sweet random image stream https://pdimagearchive.org which I find lovely to just let wash over me and occasionally click on some images to explore.

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org I do have a question...It looks like images no longer have the clickable tags attached to them. Is that true, or did I just happen to find some images that have no tags? It was awesome to be able to find an image, and then click one of the tags and find a bazillion more similar images across the collection. Thanks again!

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org This was YOU??!!?? This is an absolutely amazing resource, especially for me, a guy of that age. I love going through the old CD-ROMs to see what treasures were put out there in the pre-Internet world. For those not in the know, these CD-ROMs were what is now the Internet, but at the time modems were so slow, it was actually faster ti buy (or trade) CD-ROMs than to download the information they contained. Yes, for many people the postal service had higher throughput than computer networks. Thank you so much for providing this amazing tool and preserving a piece of history in a way that is accessible to everyone.

We didn't vote for THAT!"

@Pkbwood@mastodon.online Agreed 100% Although I would tell my students that while they might not want to actually cite Wikipedia (there is still prejudice against it as a source) the article would have a a few to hundreds of other sources -- and those are generally an excellent starting point for a research paper.

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot @robinhood@yiff.life Agreed here 100% Many times my partner will ask me how do to X in some app or another. I will vaguely recall that some app that did a similar task on some obsolete operating system had an option for that in the menus. I'll tell you though, going through menus and sub-menus on most apps now looking for something takes a lot of endurance.

@_elena My personal feeling about algorithmic feeds is pretty much the same as "targeted" ads. In this case, they miss much more than they hit. So you end up with a feed you mostly ignore. For example, I was on Facebook many years ago (long since left). I had both friends and family and news type things (for example Progressive magazine) in my feed. The posts from friends and family were short and I could see what they were up to with what I could see in the feed (i.e. I didn't have to click on their posts). News articles I had to click on to see what they were about. A lot of them I didn't actually read once I saw what they were about, click bait is like that. Didn't take long before my entire feed was news things -- no friend or family at all. And the news things became more and more clickbait as the algorithm drug up new things for my feed. I could scroll for hours before I saw something actually useful. Among other things, this is what killed FB for me.

@terri@social.afront.org I will say this, even in the face of the comment that already exists here... People like to say things like "science doesn't work" and then go on to name fraud, commercial interests and so on. Which is all true enough. But when we find that "science doesn't work" it is because "science" itself found the errors. It was other researchers who tried to replicate, reanalyzed, looked at the books, etc to determine that the results were in question. Figuring out that "science doesn't work" is part of the process of science. And Retraction Watch is an important part of that!
