One way you can "save the web" is by creating your own homepage or link tree instead of relying on you Fedi profile to do all of the work for you. Look at my Mastodon profile. It has my descriptions, some hashtags, but only three links. One is to show I'm a PeerTube owner (relevant to the Fedi), another is my Matrix chat that is open to people on the Fedi (relevant to the Fedi) and a link to my homepage. Once you go to my homepage you learn about all of my other services that I use plus a little about me. It's colorful, it looks good on mobile (which most people use) and it shows off my style. A lot like the old web did with Geocities or Myspace. (I use Neocities.org to host my homepage. It's free but there are perks to donating.) The web will only die if we give over to corporations. Create a home for yourself on the web. Tell people about it. Give yourself a place to call your own and make it look anyway you'd like.

Last night we spent the evening talking about her and remembering the love that we gave her. #today I need to follow up on a few things but other then that, the day is mine. I may livestream. I'm trying to get back into it. It's fun. What are you up to today?

RIP Helen. When @beingtam@mastodon.social came into my life many years ago, she had this plump tabby and mean old cat named Helen. Helen would scratch your legs or your arms or any part of you that she could reach if you got near her. She didn’t want to be touched, and she didn’t want to be picked up. But I knew how to win her heart. I slowly got her to start trusting me. I patiently worked with her for years until finally, she stopped attacking people when they walked by her, and even started showing affection. The last couple of years have been hard for her, but we’ve tried to take care of her the past we could. We don’t really know how old she was as she was a rescue cat. But we know she was old. A few nights ago, we brought her upstairs to our bedroom as we tend to do when it’s obvious that she wants to socialize, and we lay her on the bed, give her some treats and spend some hours just letting her be with us and petting her. I will miss Helen. I will miss her coming up to me to lay at my feet when I’m on my laptop. I will miss her cries when she wants to come upstairs. I will miss her soft purr as she slept with my hand on her back. She was a good cat. And we will all miss her.

So I'm having a slight bit of anxiety over setting myself up to be my fathers POA and I'm not sure why? I think it may be because I'm afraid of doing something wrong or getting something wrong and screwing it up for my father. I can't afford an attorney so I'm relying on information that I can gather myself and the advice of the senior living facility my father is in. And I know that this isn't as complicated as my brain wants to believe it is. Once I get the paper work all done, I'll have my father add me to his bank account and have him alert his doctor to inform me on his health, and when the time comes, help make decisions for him. But something deep inside of me just keeps telling me that I'm going to screw this up somehow. That I'm going to somehow make things worse for him by not getting the right paper work or having the right signatures. It all sounds silly in my head. I know people who are much less equipped mentally than I am who set all of this up and handle it with little issue. So why do I feel like I'm going to fuck it up?

I’m so glad that I decided to repurpose my oldest laptop running Linux Mint, into a Jellyfin server. I have it running with the lid shut and the screen off, and it just sits there doing its thing for the last several months now. Every week I give it an update, run a few torrents, and update the library. I just love it when I can use old tech for new purposes. That thing cost a pretty penny back in the day. I’m glad that I can squeeze more value out of it. Better to be my Jellyfin server, then to be in a landfill.

So it looks like the thing I hated about the last two Dune movies, is going to be explored more in the third. I think the changes that they made to Channi were lazy. The book version was a die hard believer. Someone who believed in Muadib 100%. She was a place of solace and strength for him. When he didn’t want to believe in himself, she believed in him. And instead of exploring, how a person becomes that devote, with that much love for a man she knows must do terrible things, they take the easy path and make her a rebel to her own people. And by doing that they take away some of Paul’s humanity. They take away the innocence that he was only willing to display in her presence. They took away a big part of the context of why he needed to follow the golden path. I’ve enjoyed movies in the past that weren’t exactly the way the books went. Mostly because they kept to the spirit of the book. This change just didn’t sit with me. They didn’t keep to the spirit of who she was. So yeah, I’m not looking forward to the third movie.

What a fucking weird week this has been. Between Nissan trying to fuck us over on providing a rental car, to the power at home going on and off for two days, to having to take power of attorney for my dad, it's all been a struggle. The shit with Nissan is the worst of it though. So much passing the buck that nothing is getting done. It's getting to the point we may have to seek legal actions. Regardless though, I move forward. We'll get through this one way or another. I'm just hoping I don't have to burn down a dealership. Seems like a waste of matches.

Well, it looks like we’re gonna go with the buyback from Nissan. They are offering us the Kelley Blue Book value +40%. Which will only leave about $2000 on the debt that we owe for the car. Which is still a pretty good deal. They’re going to give us a rental car for 30 days, and in that time we’re going to find a new EV. Oddly enough, the 2026 Nissan leaf so far has some of the best reviews. We’re also looking at Hyundai and Chevrolet. Basically it’s going to come down to who can give us front and rear facing cameras, faster charging, and good storage space for my girlfriend‘s mother‘s wheelchair, at the best price. Good deal for us honestly. We got stuck at an interest rate that we didn’t like anyway. So this gives us the opportunity to reset all of that. So, yay!

What a fucking morning this has turned out to be. Girlfriend got a call from a third party associated with Nissan about the battery for her electric vehicle that has been recalled telling her that her battery is out of stock and that if she wants, someone will call her later to make an offer to buy back the car. For how much? We wont know until they call. Then I get a call from the administrator at the old folks home where my dad is at in Indiana (I'm in California) telling me that he needs to move to an assisted care facility and that I needed to take over his finances because he hasn't been paying his bills and he's been forgetting to take his medications. Oh and apparently the police had to pick him up and give him a ride home because he ran out of battery on his electric scooter and forgot where he was. So now I have to call him, convince him to give me power of attorney, and move to an assisted care facility. None of which he will do willingly. What a great way to start the week.
