📋 Yesterday, we finished our scientific program at our southernmost HAUSGARTEN station (~2390m depth) with last deployments of our multiple corer, our beloved box corer Rosi, OFOBS camera system and the last CTD ☺️.
🚢 Now, Polarstern is steaming south towards Tromsø.

🐙 At our central HAUSGARTEN station (2500m), we saw a dumbo octopus, snailfish, eelpouts, a stalked jelly, sponges, anemones & soft corals on dropstones; sea lilies, feather stars, starfish, sea cucumbers, scale worms, amphipods in burrows, ctenophores and- unfortunately- many #plastic items proving once again how widespread it has become, even in the #Arctic #DeepSea!

📸 Yesterday, we deployed our sediment profiling camera at the HAUSGARTEN Observatory. It goes into the sediment and takes a photo of the top 21 cm as a profile. Jennifer Dannheim from @awi@helmholtz.social #DeepSea Group explains that this enables us, for example, to assess the penetration depth of oxygen and 🪱 bioturbation, i.e. burrowing activities of animals inhabiting the sediments, much like earthworms in soil. #PS155 #Arctic

🎞️ Here are some peeks from last night’s camera transect at the shallowest station of the HAUSGARTEN Observatory: a skate, eelpouts, snailfish, ling, sea spiders, shrimps, amphipods, scaleworms, brittlestars, starfish, jellies, dropstones colonised by sponges, soft corals and anemones, pockmark-like structures, and plastic!

🏝️Land ahoy! On the way to our station off Svalbard, I did litter surveys again. Alongside seaweed, I spotted 12 pieces of plastic and a 🛳️ cruise ship. So close to land, Barbara’s hand net came up teeming with wonderful life-but also with #plastic.

„ #Bremen hat seit Jahren Konzepte für eine klimafreundliche Mobilität. Das klingt gut. Doch die eigenen Beschlüsse werden oft nicht umgesetzt, wenn ihre Auswirkungen unbequem werden. Ein Volksentscheid will das per Gesetz ändern.“

🪸Our new paper led by Lily Böhringer is out: Benthic megafauna from @awi@helmholtz.social #HAUSGARTEN Observatory in the #Arctic #DeepSea went through significant changes. From 2002-2021, selected taxa populations declined ranging from 28% for crinoids to 93% for soft corals.
