It's the same when it comes to technology. Not all of us use the same devices or do the same things with those devices either.

@stevo399@dragonscave.space I tend to rant too much about Windows and Microsoft--less so about Apple--but I have issues with Apple also. I suppose that will always be the case. 🤔 My biggest problem with technology is being forced to endure features I'd really rather not have. Some of these, one can turn off, and others not.

@techsinger@tweesecake.social @stevo399@dragonscave.space @BTyson@dragonscave.space @jpellis2008@dragonscave.space The first year I did this, it took me more time because I was learning to use iOS at the same time. Perhaps, because I do basic things like texting, email, reading, writing and browsing the net, but I find I can do each of these things just as quickly on my phone as I could on the computer. I quite often forget I'm typing using a BT keyboard with my phone and not using a computer. I would say working with files--saving them and moving them around--took me the most time to learn and understand. Now, I do all that as a matter of course and don't even think about it. As for app updates, I find they break very seldom, and I have yet to have sounds or speech suddenly disappear after app or even iOS updates. These things used to happen all the time with Windows updates, and is the primary reason I decided to use my phone. Also, app updates take almost no time for me to install, and i was spending what I considered to be way too much time updating the computer. The point I'm attempting to make here is, until one tries using their phone for more tasks, they really can't know how easy or difficult it is. Once I stopped expecting my phone to behave like my PC is when I really began to learn how to use it.

@jpellis2008@dragonscave.space @BTyson@dragonscave.space @stevo399@dragonscave.space Granted, I don't code or do anything complicated. I used a screen reader--JAWS and NVDA, for many years--and when I switched to using only my phone, I found there is very very little I cannot do using my phone. It does work well for some people, but certainly not for everyone. People who say it can't be done are not altogether correct. Some of us do this, and I'm one who plans never to return to using a computer again.

@LeonianUniverse When I was learning cane travel, I knew my directions, but I had such issues with northeast/southwest intersection corners. It was so frustrating. I mentioned it to my dad and he got out the tracing wheel and made me a map. We walked our neighborhood, which I was familiar with, and my dad showed me the intersection corners on the map. It made sense to me, immediately. I had asked the O&M instructor to draw me a map, and the person refused. After that, when I had a complicated route, my dad would draw me a map, and I knew it, just like that, and I could easily reverse it in my head. To this day, I'm still like that. If I can see it on paper, I can learn it with no problem. I think O&M instructors really need to take into account how someone learns and teach them accordingly. We're each different and how we learn any number of things. What works for me may not work for someone else. And once you figure out how you learn best, you can learn most anything.

@NightDrake @LeonianUniverse Something I find very hypocritical, at least in the US, is how difficult it is, financially, for anyone on SSI to manage as a married couple. Not so difficult on SSDI, and yet, so many judge. We shouldn't go about making it harder for people, financially or health insurance wise to be married. Those aren't my circumstances. I simply do not want to give up control of my life and finances to another, but I see this income difficulty for those on SSI, and I feel bad about that for them.

@NikJov @Dennislong82 @lexipic My legal background leads me to say otherwise. That's why employers and businesses often require employees, even of non-profit organizations, to sign confidentiality agreements. Be My Eyes could easily require that of volunteers, and volunteers could be required to use their legal names. It isn't a perfect world, but laws do have teeth.

@Dennislong82 @lexipic I do believe there is more they could do, yes! An email saying ... pretty please, don't do this ... is not of much value, I don't think. As i said earlier, it is just a start. Something else i don't understand is why the blindness community, as a whole, is not speaking to this. Of course, this is not the only case where something should be done and isn't. 😣

@Dennislong82 @lexipic I will be cautious about using BME from now on, but I would hate to see it gone. I think the way to resolve this is with some serious consequences to volunteers who record audio or video as they're helping someone. If that doesn't work, I think BME should be held legally responsible under the law, if they cannot stop this behavior. After all, if I have a service animal, and that animal damages property or harms someone, I could be held legally responsible under the law. So, to say that a company cannot resolve this problem, I think, is an catch-all excuse not to do anything. Platitudes don't change situations, constructive action does.

@Dennislong82 @lexipic Yes, I asked these very questions earlier--and the response was mostly that it's an unsolvable problem. Well, anything is unsolvable if no one as made to care, and the way forward, as I see it, is to have serious consequences for wrongdoing, not a cadre of excuses.

@Lisasali @ppatel @mcourcel @LeonianUniverse Yes, I'm done them that way too. I've sometimes split them open and put butter in the middle also. Lately, i've just been doing them in the microwave. No foil of course. I have these oval shaped dishes for baking potatoes that I bought in the microwave cookware section at target, about 20 years ago. They work pretty well. The skin even is a little crispy.

The Longhorn makes wonderful baked potatoes. I wonder if they use a similar process? I've done baked potatoes wrapped in foil, but somehow, they don't come out as well as the ones at the Longhorn.

@LeonianUniverse No one has ever said that to me, but if they do, well that's okay. I use my rice cooker more for other things than rice than I do for rice. I use it to make soup, hard boil eggs, cooking oatmeal, cooking dried beans--and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other things--or yes pasta and noodles. I've found that a lot of the rice cooker recipes, just like microwave directions are terrible. Food cooked in the microwave, according to most directions is not good. So, I only read the directions to see what I might learn from them, but hardly every follow them. With a rice cooker, unless you have a fancy one, which I don't, you have two temperature settings, cook and warm. So, what one has to do is add the ingredients in an order that won't over cook them. I do this all the time with soups, and after a few experiments, I've mostly learned how to do this. I haven't used the stove to make soups for a long time. And when I make oatmeal in the microwave, all I heat is the water, to nearly boiling. I pour that water over my oatmeal in a bowl and let it sit for a minute or two without staring. It comes out just like stove top oatmeal. No one taught me this, I just learned by doing.

@LeonianUniverse I do agree with you. It's one thing when you're served something at someone's home, but it's quite another when you order food from a restaurant. The restaurant should make it as you ask. For instance, I don't like seasoning on my burger or steak. So many places use spicy seasoning, so I order it with no seasoning. If I'm at someone's home for a BBQ and they serve burgers, I eat it without saying anything. People who know me though usually keep a patty or two out for me, just because they know I like it that way.

@amy0223 @frog67 It is near impossible to read ingredient lists for absolutely everything, and this is a prime example of why not doing so could be very dangerous. Some people have fish allergies. The other issue is, a lot of these manufacturers change around certain ingredients by saying and/or to this or that. Sometimes, you really don't know if something contains a specific ingredient or not.

@kernsac @technocounselor @baxaphobia @amy0223 That's another reason I untie and retie my shoes when I put them on again.

@baxaphobia @technocounselor @kernsac @amy0223 I used to wear them, but can't find any around here without memory foam which I do not like at all in shoes.

@technocounselor @kernsac @baxaphobia @amy0223 I wish I could do that, but my foot is narrow, and if I don't tie the laces and snug them up, my feet slide around.

@boogiechild @technocounselor @baxaphobia @amy0223 There you go. I live in flannel pants and t-shirts if I'm not going anywhere, and that is most days.

@kernsac @baxaphobia @amy0223 I've always been pretty good at understanding what someone is showing me, if they go slow, and then I can adapt the technique into something that works for me. To this day, I'm still like that. For whatever reason, I just couldn't do it with tying my shoes, until that moment.

@kernsac @baxaphobia @amy0223 Yes! Yes! That was my problem also. I don't know what finally clicked for me, not consciously, but all of a sudden I could do it.

@kernsac @baxaphobia @amy0223 I was almost ten also--must be a magical age or something. Dad and I were sitting at the kitchen table with his size 13 shoe, and all of a sudden I tied a perfect bow. He didn't seem surprised, but I sure was. Not being able to tie my shoes had upset me for a couple of years. I was always worried they would come untied, and I'd have to ask someone to tie it for me. I never had to do that, but it was a huge relief knowing I could tie my own shoes and other things that required a bow.
