On August 3, 1804, naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and botanist Aimé Bonpland returned to Europe after a five-year, 9,600-kilometer (6,000-mile) journey through South America, Mexico, and the United States. The photo shows dolomite-crystals on pink quartz, collected by Humboldt himself in the Valenciana quarry, Guanajuato-Province, Mexico, and today hosted in the collection of the Natural History Museum of Berlin.

"To anyone who, for the first time, sees a great stretch of sandy shore covered with innumerable ridges and furrows, as if combed with a giant comb, a dozen questions must immediately present themselves. How do these ripples form?" April 28, 1854, birthday of British engineer, mathematician, physicist, and inventor Hertha Marks Ayrton. In a 1904 paper she explained how currents can form sand ripples 🌊

The 1989-90 eruption and ash fall of Redoubt seriously affected the populace, commerce, and oil production throughout the Cook Inlet region and air traffic as far away as Texas. Total estimated economic costs are $160 million (Tuck and others, 1992), making this eruption of Redoubt the second costliest (after a certain Mount St. Helens) in U.S. history.

March 22, 1832, German author and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe died on this day. But he was also a mining engineer and geologist.

He suggested some of the colors still used today on geological maps & studied the geology of the Alps ⛰️

The common iron-hydroxide mineral Goethite was named after him 💎

February 12, 1813, birthday of American geologist James Dwight Dana. Known thanks to his books "System of Mineralogy" and "Manual of Mineralogy." The Manual of Mineralogy is still a standard college textbook in the US today.

Dana's "System of Mineralogy" proposed a system to classify minerals still in part used today, with native elements like gold at the start and complex silicates, like natrolite, at the end.
